el.6.7.5 William Ellis born April-June 1848 at Staveley

Widowed Samuel remarried in 1850 at Saltergate Wesleyan Chapel, Chesterfield.  His new wife was Jane Beardsley born c1820 in Staveley, the daughter of Sarah Beardsley.  The Beardsley family were living in New Street, Staveley in 1841, near neighbours of Samuel & his first wife Ellen.

In 1851 Samuel was a coal miner & he & Jane were living at Staveley with Samuel's children Mary Ellen (9), Elizabeth (4) & William (2).

In 1861 Samuel & Jane had moved to Yorkshire & were living at the Grocer’s shop, Hoyland Nether. Samuel’s occupation was given as coalminer/grocer. Children at home were Elizabeth, William, a labourer in the coal pit, Ruth (7) & Sarah A (5). They had a boarder, Mark Beardsley (Jane's brother?), a coal miner & sugar boiler.

Samuel & Jane were living at Nether Field, Hoyland Nether, in 1871 & Samuel was now a coal miner. The only child still with them was William who was described as an imbecile. Daughter Elizabeth married Joseph Watson on November 6th, 1871 at Woodhouse, Leeds.  Daughter Ruth was working as a servant for Jabez Crawshaw & family, a butcher in Barnsley at the time of the 1871 census.

They were still at Nether Field in 1881, & with Samuel & Jane was daughter Sarah, a dressmaker. Daughter Sarah was to marry William White, a coal miner, in Oct-December 1881 & by 1911 they were living in Noble St, Hoyland Nether with 3 of their 4 children. There was a 32 year old patient, William Ellis, listed as an imbecile in the lunatic asylum at Ecclesfield, Wortley, W. Yorks in 1881 who could be son William.  Further records suggest that William was admitted to Middlewood Hospital, Sheffield in 1873 & that he died on March 8th, 1891.

Daughter Ruth married Frederick Muscroft Thornsby, an assurance agent, in Oct-December 1884 & by 1911 they were living at King St, Hoyland Nether with son Herbert Samuel Muscroft Thornsby.

By 1891 Samuel & Jane were living on their own at King St, Hoyland Nether. Samuel (72) was now a pedlar.

Samuel of Cherry Tree St, Hoyland Nether was buried on October 9th, 1895 at Hoyland, aged 76.  Noted on the burial record were the words ‘certified by the burial laws amendment act’.  This suggests that Samuel was a non-conformist, the burial service being performed by a non-conformist minister.

Jane of Cherry Tree St, Hoyland Nether was buried on February 23rd, 1900 at Hoyland, aged 79.  As with Samuel it was noted that the service was conducted by a non-conformist minister.

The children of Samuel Ellis & Jane Beardsley were:

el.6.7.4. Ruth Ellis born April-June 1855 at Hunsworth, Yorkshire; died 1936 in Bolton, Lancashire
el.6.7.5. Sarah A Ellis born April-June 1856 at Hollingsend, Yorkshire
