Elizabeth Fry was the fourth child of John Fry & Caroline Stephens christened December 27th, 1816 at East Grinstead, Sussex.
At the time of the 1841 census Elizabeth was at home at Bower Farm, Hammerwood. Soon after the census Elizabeth gave birth to a son, John Fry.
On September 27th 1841 Elizabeth married James Quickenden at East Grinstead. Witnesses at the wedding were Elizabeth’s sister, Mary Ann Fry & her future husband James Hollands. James Quickenden was born February 18th, & christened March 17th, 1805 at Horne, Surrey, the son of Robert & Elizabeth Quickenden. Elizabeth’s son John was raised as John Quickenden.
In 1842 Elizabeth was a witness at the wedding of her brother Samuel Fry & Sarah Smeed at St Swithin's Church, East Grinstead.
In 1851 the family were living at Clay Pits, Forest Row & James was a farmer. James & Elizabeth had 5 children by this time – John (9), James (7), George (6), Esther (listed as Elizabeth) (4) & William (1). They also had 2 house servants.
By 1861 Elizabeth & James had moved to Mudbrook Farm, Forest Row & James was now a farmer of 145 acres. With them were children John & George, both labourers, Esther, William, Robert & Charles.
Elizabeth died in April-June 1862, her death being registered at East Grinstead, presumably just after giving birth to daughter Alice.
In the 1867 Post Office directory James, a farmer, was recorded as living at Mudbrook Farm, Forest Row, East Grinstead.
Daughter Esther married Thomas Jesse Smallpiece in Jan-March 1870 at Westminster St Margaret, London. Sadly Esther died in 1887, aged 40, & Thomas was to marry Alice Sarah Fry [f.2.6.9], Esther’s cousin, the following year.
James was still at Mudbrook Farm with the 4 youngest children & oldest son John in 1871. The Post Office directory again noted James as farmer at Mudbrook in 1874.
In January 1868 son James married Louisa Grinder in Worthing, Sussex. He became a house carpenter.
Son George married Annie Leonard on Decembe 2nd, 1871 at East Grinstead. George was a builder.
On November 23rd, 1878 son Thomas married Caroline Gladman in East Grinstead & he worked as a farm bailiff.
In July-September 1879 son John married Charlotte Sparrow in Portsea. After initially working as a miller John became the landlord of the Prince George, Kennington Cross, Surrey.
In 1881 son Charles married Amelia Reed in Brighton, Sussex & he worked as a carpenter/builder.

In 1881 James was living with his sister, Mary Leigh (born Burstow, Surrey in 1817), a farmer of 8 acres at Lintotts, Eden Bridge, Sevenoaks, Kent. James was 76 years old and described as a retired farmer.
In 1882 daughter Alice married Charles Albert Winter in East Grinstead.
James (indexed as Tuickenden) was lodging at North Lane, West Hoathly, East Grinstead in 1891 & listed as a retired farmer
In Jan-March 1896 James died at Horsham, Sussex aged 91.
