Walter Freeth [fh.4.6.1.2.11.5]

Walter Freeth was the fifth child of Noah Freeth & Ann Robinson born August 24th, 1875 at Mount Pleasant St, West Bromwich, Staffs.

In 1881 Walter & his parents & 3 brothers & 3 sisters were living at 51 Mount Pleasant St, West Bromwich.

The family were still at the same address in 1891 & Walter was now a labourer at the glass works.

Walter married Ellen Shipley in April-June, 1895 at West Bromwich Register Office. Ellen was born April-June 1877 at West Bromwich, the daughter of Ellen Slater & John Shipley, an iron filer.

In 1901 Walter & Ellen were living at 49 Mount Pleasant St, West Bromwich & Walter was now a coal hewer below ground. They had 3 children – Joseph (5), Annie (2) & Ellen (5 months). Also living with them was Ellen’s mother, Ellen Shipley, a 69 year old widow who was recorded as blind.

By 1911 Walter & Ellen had moved to 39 Newhall St, West Bromwich & Walter was still a coal miner. They now had 9 children at home – Joseph, an iron worker lathe hand, Esther (14) doing home duties, Annie, Ellen, Martha (8), Fannie (6), Noah (4), Walter (2) & Edward (1). Ellen's mother was still living with the family. Amusingly the entry on the census for son Edward reads ‘ Edward the IX’ Freeth.

Son Joseph married May Cook in 1919 at West Bromwich & in 1939 they & their family were living at Keir Rd, West Bromwich.  Joseph was an assembler (structural).

Daughter Muriel Ellen married Alfred Bevan, )a crane driver, in 1922 in West Bromwich & in 1939 they & their family were living at Horton St, West Bromwich.

Son Noah married Nellie Mason in 1929 at West Bromwich & in 1939 they & their family were living at Bernard St, West Bromwich where Noah was a house painter & decorator.

Daughter Fanny married Frederick Castle, a machinist, in 1929 & in 1939 they & their family were living in West Bromwich.

Son Edward married Gertrude Knight in 1931 in West Bromwich & in 1939 they & their family were living at Carrisbrooke Rd, West Bromwich.  Edward was also a house painter & decorator. 

Son Walter married Violet Smith in 1932 in West Bromwich & in 1939 they were living in Heat Lane, West Bromwich where Walter was a house painter & decorator.  Sadly Walter died in WW2 while serving with the Pioneer Corps.

The 1939 register shows Walter & Ellen still living at 39 New Hall St, & Walter was working as a general labourer in a factory.

There is a death for Walter Freeth in Jan-March 1948 at West Bromwich, Staffs.
