Phoebe Caroline Jones Freeth was the first child of George Freeth & Ann Jones christened July 10th, 1853 at Smethwick, Staffs.
In 1861 Phoebe was living with her parents, sister & brother at King St, Wednesbury, Staffs.
By 1871 the family were living at 2 Glad. Terr, Wednesbury where father George was a foreman at the railway. Phoebe now had 4 brothers & 2 sisters.
Phoebe married William Mayo on August 20th, 1877 at St Peter's, Harborne, Staffs. (Phoebe’s sister Sarah Ann married Thomas Dean on the same day.) William was christened April 1st, 1855 at Eldersfield, Worcestershire, the son of Sarah price & John Mayo, a farm labourer.
In 1881 Phoebe & William & their 2 year old son George Joseph were visiting Phoebe’s parents & brothers & sister at 45 High St, Smethwick. William was a now a forgeman but his occupation at the time of the 1871 census had been a boatman.
By 1891 Phoebe & William had moved to 104 Raglan Rd (the greengrocer’s shop), Smethwick. William was described as an erector of machinery. They had 3 surviving children, George Joseph, Ernest E (4) & Phoebe C (7 months). They were living in the same dwelling as Phoebe’s parents, her father George being the greengrocer, & brother John.
In 1901 Phoebe & William were living at 38 Brasshouse Lane, Smethwick with Phoebe’s parents George, aged 70 who was still a greengrocer shopkeeper & Ann. Phoebe & William’s children Ernest & Phoebe were still at home. William was now described as a steam engine fitter.
By 1911 Phoebe (listed as Caroline on census) & William had moved to 16 Galton St, Smethwick & William was now a machine fitter at the nut & bolt works. Son Ernest, a hardware warehouseman at the axle works, & daughter Phoebe were still at home. Son Ernest Edwin served with the Royal Army Medical Corps during WW1.
Phoebe died in July-September 1922, aged 69, her death being registered at Kings Norton.
Daughter Phoebe married Henry Rowland Bonham in Jan-March 1937 at Birmingham. In 1939 they were living at 6 Lodge Rd, Smethwick with their son Henry, a junior draftsman. With them was Phoebe’s brother Ernest who was a munitions worker.
