John Leonard Jones Freeth was the seventh child of George Freeth & Ann Jones born July 23rd, 1869 at Wednesbury, Staffs.
In 1871 John & his parents, brothers & sisters were living at 2 Glad. Terr, Wednesbury where father George was a foreman at the railway.
In 1881 John (listed as Leonard in the census) was still at home at 45 High St, Smethwick, Staffs.
John continued to live at home & in 1891 was with his mother & father, a greengrocer, at 104 Raglan Rd, Smethwick. John was now a brass turner.
John married Charlotte Smith in Oct-December 1892 at Smethwick, Staffs. Charlotte was born c1870, the daughter of Sophia & William Smith, a gas fitter. In 1891 Charlotte was working as a rivet porter.
In 1901 John, now known as Leonard, & Charlotte were living at 11 Suffrage St, Smethwick where Leonard was still a brass turner. They had 2 children – Leonard (4) & Thomas (10 months).
Leonard & Charlotte had moved to 73 Foundry Rd, Winson Green, Birmingham in 1911 & Leonard was still a brass worker. Son Leonard (14) was also a brass worker & son Thomas was a scholar. They now had a daughter, Clara, aged 6.
The electoral register of 1930 shows Leonard & Charlotte living at 51 Norman St, Ladywood, Birmingham & with them was son Harold Leonard & his wife Edith Mary. Also living in Norman St at this time was son Thomas & his wife Florence May.
Charlotte died in Oct-December 1934 at Birmingham.
The 1939 register shows widowed John Leonard living at 111 Dibble Rd, Smethwick & described as incapacitated. Living with him was daughter Florence Clara & her husband, Arthur Hall, a labourer in screw work. Son Harold Leonard & his wife Edith & family were living at 160 Hurst Rd, Smethwick in 1939 & Harold was an ‘oil engine cranks agent polisher despatch clerk’. Son Thomas & his wife Florence were still living at 39 Norman St, Birmingham in 1939 & Thomas was a’tool finder brass & copper’.
