Ada Freeth [fh.4.6.1.4.6.6]

Ada Freeth was the sixth child of Edwin Freeth & Thomason Ann Collins born September 16th, 1876 at Smethwick, Staffs.

In 1881 Ada was living at home at 11 Hawthorn St with her parents & 5 brothers.

In 1891 Ada was still at home with her parents, 6 brothers & 3 sisters at 36 Victoria St, Smethwick. Ada was a bedstead wheel finisher.

Ada married William Holloway in July-September 1898 at St Paul’s, Smethwick. William was born May 6th, 1878 at West Bromwich, the son of Rebecca Hetheridge & Thomas Holloway. William’s sister Louisa had married Ada’s brother Arthur Leonard Freeth in 1896.

In 1901 Ada & William were living at 3 Victoria St, Smethwick & William was a puddler at the ironworks. They had 2 daughters – Lottie L (2) & Ada (1 month). They were living next door to William’s sister – Louisa Freeth & her 2 daughters.

Ada & William were living at 19 Hawthorn St, Smethwick in 1911 where William was a mill roller at the district ironworks.  They had 3 more daughters in addition to Lottie & Ada – Lillian (6), Ethel (3) & Mabel (9 months).  It was noted on the census that they had had 6 children, only 5 of whom were still alive.

Daughter Lottie married Albert John Hawkins, a tin plate worker, in Smethwick in 1920, their banns having been published in January in Llanfrechfa, Monmouthshire, Wales.  Sadly Albert died on March 12th 1923 in Llanfrechfa, aged 30.  Lottie married again in Jan-March 1927 in West Bromwich, her second being Anthony Bennett. The 1939 register shows Lottie & Anthony, a confectioner sugar boiler, living at 14 Broadway, Oldbury with their son Anthony.

Daughter Ethel married John Mallard, a tagger seamless steel tube, in Birmingham in 1930 & in 1939 they were living at 23 Marshall Rd, Oldbury.

The 1939 register shows Ada & William at 129 St Pauls Rd, Smethwick & William was now an unemployed iron & steel worker. With them was son Arthur, a worker at the iron foundry & daughter Ada. Son Thomas Edwin & his wife Violet M (nee Allen) were living at Edmonds Rd, Oldbury where Thomas was a puller, drop forging trade.

Son Arthur married Freda Annie Clack in 1941 in Birmingham.

William died on June 24th, 1945 at 129 St Pauls Rd, Smethwick.  Probate was granted to Lloyds Bank & his effects were £577.2s.3d.

Ada died aged 72 in Jan-March 1949 at Smethwick.
