Ann Maria Freeth was the seventh child of Josiah Freeth and Mary Yates born 1851 at Smethwick, Staffs.
In 1861 (Ann) Maria was living at home at St George St, Smethwick with her parents & 2 sisters & 3 brothers.
Ann Maria’s mother Mary died prior to 1871 as her father Josiah (mistakenly written as Breath in census) was registered as a widower. The family were still at St George St.
(Ann) Maria married Isaac Turton on October 20th, 1872 at Holy Trinity, West Bromwich. Witnesses at the wedding were Caroline & Benjamin Turton. Isaac was born July-September 1849 at West Bromwich, the son of Caroline Taylor & William Turton, a boiler maker, & he & his brother Benjamin were christened June 12th, 1853 at Christ Church, West Bromwich.
In 1873 Isaac was admitted to the Smethwick branch of the United Society of Boilermakers & Iron Shipbuilders.
In 1881 Ann & Isaac were living at 93 Lewisham Rd, Smethwick & Isaac was a boiler maker in shop. They had 4 children, William H (8), Sarah A (6), John B (4) & Caroline (1). Living with them was Ann’s 74 year old father Josiah Freeth, a boiler maker. Also with them was Ann’s sister Mary, now married to William H Wills, & her brother John Freeth.
In 1885 daughter Sarah Ann was admitted to Smethwick Central Board School & her address was 10 Foundry Rd. In 1895 she was to marry Charles Hill, a fitter, in West Bromwich, her brother William being a witness at the wedding. By 1901 Sarah & Charles had a son & 3 daughters & were living in Smethwick. By 1911 the family had moved to Sheffield, Yorks & now included 2 daughters & 4 sons.
In 1886 Isaac was working at the Soho Foundry when he was a witness to the death of a workmate.
Isaac died in Oct-December 1888, aged 39, the death being registered at Kings Norton.
In 1891 widowed (Ann) Maria was living at 51 Brasshouse Lane, Smethwick with children William, a brass polisher at bedstead works, Sarah, a button maker, John, an iron moulder, Caroline, James (9) & Annie (4). Maria’s brother John was again found with his sister & listed as a boarder.
Son John married Catherine Loydon in 1895 in West Bromwich & by 1939 they & 2 sons were living in West Bromwich where John was a pig iron wheeler & general labourer.
Son William married Annie Ellen Blaymires in 1898 at Kings Norton. By 1911 they & their 2 sons & 2 daughters were still living in Smethwick where William was a bedstead polisher.
(Ann) Maria died in Oct-December 1900, aged 48, the death being registered at Kings Norton.
In 1901 the head of the family was now Carrie (Caroline) Turton, Ann Maria’s 21 year old daughter. With her at 51 Brasshouse Lane were brother James & sister Annie. Also still with them was uncle John Freeth, a general labourer. Caroline was to marry Thomas George Stevens later in 1901 at Smethwick. Sadly Thomas died in 1902 & Caroline married again in 1904, her second husband being Harry Simpson. By 1939 Caroline & Harry, a works engineer, were living in Oldbury, Worcs with 4 of their sons.
Son James married Caroline Emma Babington in 1902 & by 1911 they were living in Union St, Smethwick & James was an engineer’s fitter with 1 son & 2 daughters. By 1939 they were still in Union St with a son & daughter still at home. James was a stretcher & straightener & ….?
Daughter Annie married Edwin Collins in 1909 in Smethwick & by 1911 they were living in Oakwood Rd, Smethwick & Edwin was a ledger clerk for a bamboo furniture company.
