Edith Harriett Grove [g.11.3]

Edith Harriett Grove was the third child of Frederick Grove & Alice born June 11th, 1868 at Croydon and christened August 9th, 1868 at St. John the Baptist, Croydon, Surrey.

In 1871 she was living at Haddon New Rd, Croydon, with her parents & sisters Alice Edith & Emily L.

By 1881 the family had moved to Union Rd, Croydon & had grown to include 6 sisters & 1 brother.

In December 1887 Edith was a witness at the wedding of her older sister Alice Edith to William Edward Adams at Christ Church, Lewisham.

Edith was still at home in 1891, now in Beulah Grove, Croydon, with parents and brothers and sisters. She was an assistant gas fitter.

Edith married Alfred Edward Jackson on September 29th, 1897 at Christ Church, Forest Hill, Lewisham.  Alfred was an electrical engineer & gave his address as 96 Elliscombe Rd, Old Charlton.  Alfred was born July-September 1869  in Birmingham, the son of Edward Jackson, a secretary.  Edith gave her address as 13 Kemble Rd, Stanstead Rd. Witnesses were William Edward Adams, Edith’s brother-in-law, John Percy Jackson & Ethel Elizabeth Grove, Edith’s younger sister.

In 1901 Edith and Alfred were living at 39 Rowfant Rd, Streatham, Wandsworth, London. Thay had a two year old son, John Alfred. Alfred was described as an engineer. They had an 18 year old servant, Louisa Avery.

By 1911 Edith & Alfred had moved to Wayland, Derby Rd, Sutton, Surrey & Alfred was described as an electrical engineer.  Their son John was still at home & was a scholar.  They had a 26 year old servant, Rachel May Manning to help maintain their 9-roomed house.

Son John married Lilian Coleman in 1933 at Christ Church, Streatham, London & at that time was manager of an envelope factory.

Alfred died at Treethorpe, Sackville Rd, Cheam, Surrey on December 17th, 1937.  Probate was granted to widow Edith & son John, works manager & his estate was £4,118.5s.6d.

In 1939 Edith was staying at a private hotel at Downview Rd, Worthing, Sussex & noted as living on private means.

Edith, of 8 Kingsley Gardens, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, died on July 4th, 1942 at Maitland Nursing Home, Cheltenham.  She was buried on July 9th, 1942 at St Dunstan, Cheam, Surrey.  Administration of her estate was granted at Llandudno to son John Alfred Jackson, captain in H.M. Army, on September 11th, 1942 & her effects were £323.18s.1d. Edith was described as widowed at the time of her death.
