Ethel Elizabeth Grove [g.11.4]

Ethel Elizabeth Grove was the fourth child of Frederick Grove & Alice born  May 2nd, 1871 at Croydon, Surrey & christened January 12th, 1872 at St John the Baptist, Croydon.

In December 1887 Edith was a witness at the wedding of her older sister Alice Edith to William Edward Adams at Christ Church, Lewisham.

In 1881 Ethel was living with her mother and father, brother and sisters, at Union Road, Croydon,

By 1891 the family had moved to Beulah Road Croydon. Ethel was still living at home & described as a domestic servant.  Listed on the census with them was a little 2 year old Emily Grove.  It seems likely that this was Ethel’s illegitimate daughter – see below.

In 1901 Ethel (unmarried) was living at home with her widowed mother Alice and brothers Frederick & Charles and sister Olive. NB Ethel (29) was listed on the census out of chronological order alongside a 12 year old Emily (listed as grand-daughter to Alice) – perhaps Ethel’s daughter.

Ethel married William James Harrison on October 12th, 1901, at St Peter’s, Notting Hill, Kensington.  William, a shopman, was born c1873 in Carlisle, Cumberland, the son of Margaret & John Harrison, a tailor.  Witnesses at the wedding were W. E. Adams, Ethel’s brother-in-law, & Alice Grove.

In 1911 Ethel & William were living at 4 Dunsford Avenue, Wimbledon Park, London & William was a draper.  They had 2 children – William John (7) & Ethel Ena (5).

Daughter Ethel married Herbert William Fryer, a solicitor’s clerk, on August 29th, 1931 at St Luke’s, Wimbledon Park, Surrey. It was noted that her father was deceased by this time.  In 1939 they were living at 14 Hayes Crescent, Sutton & Cheam, Surrey with their daughter Shirley A (born 1934).

The children of Ethel Elizabeth Grove & William James Harrison were:

g.11.4.1  William John Harrison born Oct-December 1903 at Chiswick, London
g.11.4.2  Ethel Ena Harrison born February 5th, 1906 at Chiswick, London; died July-September 1983 at Chickester, W. Sussex
