Charles Grove was the fifth child of William Grove & Elizabeth Lloyd christened May 14th, 1834 at St John the Baptist, Croydon.
In 1841 Charles was living at home at Church St, Croydon with his family.
In 1851 Charles was still living at home at Croydon with his family.
On February 26th, 1854 Charles married Frances Richardson at St Andrew by the Wardrobe, London. Frances was the daughter of Michael Richardson, a bailiff. Charles gave his occupation as a mason & his address was 34 St Andrew’s Hill. Charles’ father’s occupation was given as gravel merchant. Witnesses at the wedding were (illegible initial) Groves & William Groves.
Charles & his wife Frances & their 2 daughters, Emily G (2) & Fanny H (1), emigrated to Sydney, Australia on the Admiral Lyons, arriving on September 15th, 1857. Charles was described on the shipping list as a stone mason & it was noted that little Fanny had died on the voyage.
It seems that the family settled south of Sydney in Bowral & in 1874 Charles’ brother Henry William Grove [g.6] & his family came out to join them.
Daughter Emily Georgina married William Henry Baker, eldest son of James Baker of Dungog, on March 24th, 1880 at St Simon & St Jude’s, Bowral, NSW. The family were living at Croydon House, Bowral at this time.
Son Frederick Charles married Mary Ann Cook in 1882 & they were to have 7 children – May E, Stanley C, Elsie E, Herbert F, Clifford Walter, George Thomas & Doris L, all born at Bowral, NSW.
Son Walter Henry married Elizabeth Anne Larter, eldest daughter of Joseph Caleb Larter of Woolahra, on July 22nd, 1883 at All Saints, Woollahra.
Son Charles married Maud Elizabeth Frost, daughter of Mr W.H. Frost, in December 1887 at St Mary’s, Waverley, Sydney.
Charles died on August 27th,1895, aged 60, at Bowral, NSW & was buried at St Simon & St Judes Anglican Cemetery, Bowral. His headstone notes that he was a native of Croydon, England.
Frances died on October 22nd, 1913, aged 80, at Bowral, NSW & was buried alongside Charles.
