William Grove [g]

Tree showing lineage from William Grove to grand daughter Harriett Annie Grove

William Grove was born c1789 at Croydon, Surrey.

William married Hannah King on January 9th, 1813 at St Mary, Newington, Surrey. Witnesses at the wedding were Richard Welch & Mary King.  William signed his name & Hannah made her mark.

Hannah was born April 1st, 1785 & christened April 8th, 1785 at St John, Croydon, the daughter of Sarah & Thomas King.

There is a burial for Hannah Groves on July 1st, 1824 at St John the Baptist, Croydon, Surrey

The children of William Grove & Hannah King were:

g.1 Anne Grove christened August 21st, 1814 at St John the Baptist, Croydon, Surrey, died 1901
g.2 Catherine Grove christened July 13th, 1817 at St John the Baptist, Croydon, Surrey, buried February 15th 1819 at St John, Croydon
g.3 Hannah Grove christened January 9th, 1820 at St John the Baptist, Croydon, Surrey; died April-June 1887 at Newington, Surrey
g.4 Louisa Grove christened February 17th, 1822 at St John the Baptist, Croydon, Surrey; died April-June 1913 at Hackney

William married for the second time on October 26th, 1826 at St John the Baptist, Croydon. His new wife was Elizabeth Lloyd who was the daughter of Benjamin & Anne Lloyd born on October 8th, 1801 & christened October 29th, 1801 at St Johns, Croydon. Witnesses at the wedding were John Fulker & Mary Ann ……… It was noted on the marriage certificate that William was a widower.

William & Elizabeth had 8 children – 2 girls & 6 boys between 1827 & 1844. At the time of the christening of their first daughter, Harriett, William gave his occupation as corn chandler. Sadly Harriett died aged 4 years.

At the time of the marriage of William & Hannah’s first child Anne to Timothy Fulker in 1837, William’s occupation was given as a coal merchant.

The 1841 census lists William & Elizabeth Groves as living at Church St, Croydon, Surrey with their children Henry (12), William (10), Elizabeth (10), Charles (7) & Frederick (1). William was a labourer.

In 1851 the family were still living in Croydon where William was a labourer. Sons Henry (22), Charles (18), Frederick (11) & George (8) were at home & with them was a nurse child – Caroline Fulker aged 4. Caroline Agnes was the youngest daughter of John & Mary Fulker of Croydon, born 7th October, 1846. Mary Fulker was formerly Mary Lloyd, sister of Elizabeth Lloyd & therefore Caroline was William & Elizabeth’s niece. Caroline's mother Mary Fulker had died in April-June 1847, so presumably Caroline had come to live with the Grove family as a consequence. Caroline's father & older brother & sisters were still living in Croydon in 1851, where her father was a grocer.

In 1861 William (72) & Elizabeth (61) had moved to Tamworth Rd, Croydon where William was a grave digger. Frederick was still at home & was employed as a blacksmith. Caroline Fulker was still living with them as a general servant. Caroline was to marry George Campkin in 1869 at Newington.  There was also a lodger, Toney Roffey, a plumber.

William died aged 76 at the Whitgift Hospital, Croydon & & was buried on November 25th, 1865 at St Johns, Croydon. (The foundation stone of the Whitgift Hospital was laid in 1596 by Archbishop Whitgift who decided to build the Hospital of the Holy Trinity, now known as the Almshouses, after seeing the suffering & poverty caused by war & bad harvests.)

There is a burial record for an Elizabeth Groves on May 15th, 1870 at St James’, Croydon.
