We are grateful to Carilee Sleight for information on Henrietta’s son, known as Harry Horton
Henrietta Horton was the first child of Henry Horton & Sarah Ann Hancock born April-June 1848 at West Bromwich, Staffs.
In 1851 Henrietta & her parents & younger brother Joseph were living at Walsall St, West Bromwich.
By 1861 the family had moved to the High St, Knutton, Silverdale, Staffs.
Henrietta had 3 sisters & 3 brothers at home.
On July 24th, 1867 Henrietta married John Simcock at the Register Office in Wolstanton. John gave his address as Dale Hall, Burslem & Henrietta was living at Bank St, Tunstall. She gave her age as 21 years but she was in fact just 18. Witnesses at the wedding were William Simcock, John's older brother & Sarah Ann Horton, Henrietta's mother. Both William & John Simcock were unable to sign & made their marks on the certificate. John was born July-September 1842 at Knutsford, Cheshire, the son of Ann Platt & John Simcock, a hay dealer.

In July 1870 Henrietta & John had a son, John Henry, who was born in America St, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent.
Birth certificate of John Henry Simcock
At the time of the 1871 census Henrietta & her son John Henry Simcock (age given as 6 months on census) were with her parents & brothers & sisters at Bank St, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. Henrietta was a machinist sempstress. Husband John was with his parents & brothers George & James at the time of the census at 18 Orme St Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. Both John & his father were described as hay dealers.
Sadly Henrietta, just 22 years old, died a few days after the census on April 7th, 1871 at Bank St. The cause of her death was anaemia & disease of the kidneys from which she had suffered for 7 months i.e. since the birth of her son John Henry. The informant of her death was her mother-in-law Ann Simcock who was in attendance at Henrietta's death. Ann's address was given as 18 Orme St, Burslem.
Henrietta's death certificate
Henrietta's son John Henry appears to have been cared for by his grandparents Henry & Sarah Horton with whom he was living in 1881. He travelled with them to USA in May 1884 when he was listed on the ship’s manifest as John Horton, but according to the list of passengers produced by the Mormons in their inventory of 'saints' travelling to America on the SS Arizona he was listed as John Sincox Horton.
Widowed John Simcock emigrated to the USA where he lived in Massachusetts. It is known that John’s parents were living in Swansea, Bristol, Massachusetts at the time of the 1880 census. John died on July 14th 1889, aged 46, at Swansea, Massachusetts.
Son John Henry became known as Harry Horton & was to marry Vesta Wright on April 30th, 1896 in Blackfoot, Bingham, Idaho. By 1900 Harry & Vesta had moved to western Montana & in 1911 they built a home in Miles City, Montana where they lived until their deaths. Harry became a prominent citizen in Miles City & he & Vesta had 4 children.
