Henry Horton was the tenth child of Henry Horton & Esther Lines born May 24th, 1823 & christened June 15th, 1823 at All Saints, West Bromwich. Staffs.
In 1841 Henry was still at home with his parents at Walsall St, West Bromwich. There were 4 other brothers at home as well as 2 sisters & a visiting sister-in-law. Henry was a forgeman.
Henry married Sarah Ann Hancox on March 2nd, 1847 at Christ Church, West Bromwich. Witnesses at the wedding were James Clansey & Lucy Turner. Sarah (Hancock) was born November 6th, 1824 & christened October 24th, 1825 at St Phillip’s, Birmingham, the daughter of Harriet & Thomas Hancox, a maker of steel toys.
By 1851 Henry & Sarah were living at Walsall St, West Bromwich with their 2 children – Henrietta (3) & Joseph (1). Henry was a stock taker in the iron works & Sarah was a tailoress. They had 2 lodgers.
By 1861 the family had moved to Knutton, Silverdale, Staffs & Henry was now a forgeman. At home were Henrietta, Joseph, a forgeman, Sarah A (9), Harriet L (7), Clara Ann (5), Henry (3) & Jeremiah (6 months).
They had moved again by the time of the 1871 census & were living at Bank St, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. Sarah was a tailoress & Henry was a cutter down at forge as was son Joseph, & son Henry was a pitter at the forge. Other children still at home were Clara, Jeremiah, William H (6) & daughter Henrietta, now wife of John Simcock, was also visiting with her son John H Simcock (6 months). Henrietta was a machinist sempstress, who sadly died later that year.
Henry & Sarah were still living in Tunstall in 1881 but in a new street which had not been named or numbered. Henry was still a forgeman as was son Jeremiah who was still at home. Son William was working as a bricklayer & also with them was grandson John Simcock, & a domestic servant Martha Swindle.
Henry & Sarah sailed from Liverpool to New York on May 17th, 1884 on the SS Arizona, arriving May 26th, their final destination being Ogden, Utah. With them was son William (19) & John (11) who was listed as John Sincox Horton on the ship’s manifest. This was presumably grandson John Simcock whose actual age would have been several years older than stated. Perhaps this was to procure a lower fare. Sons Joseph and Jeremiah had already emigrated to the USA in the early 1880’s. Henry & Sarah appear to have adopted the Mormon way of life & were emigrating along with many other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (it was noted that son William & John Sincox Horton were not members). According to the voyage notes they reached Salt Lake City, Utah on June 1st 1884. It seems likely that they went to join Henry’s brother Joseph [h.1.11] & his wife Jane who lived in Smithfield, Utah.

Sarah died on December 6th, 1885 & was buried at Smithfield Cemetery, Utah - the cemetery where brother-in-law Joseph Horton [h.1.11] & his wife Jane were buried.

By 1900 widowed Henry was listed on the US census as living at Bear Lake, Montpelier Co, Idaho. He was boarding with the Horsley family & was described as a 77 year old labourer. It was noted on the census that the year of his immigration to the USA was 1886. Son William Hancock Horton was farming in Idaho at this time.
Henry died on February 1st, 1908 in Montpelier, & was buried at Montpelier Cemetery, Idaho.
