Sarah Ann Horton [h.1.10.3]

Sarah Ann Horton was the third child of Henry Horton & Sarah Ann Hancox born c1851 at West Bromwich, Staffs. No record of Sarah Ann could be found in the GRO index, but there is a Hannah Horton, mother Hancox, registered in Oct-December 1850.

By 1861 the family had moved to the High St, Knutton, Silverdale, Staffs. Sarah had 3 sisters & 3 brothers at home.

On September 6th, 1869 Sarah married William Heath, the marriage being registered at Wolstanton. Witnesses at the wedding were Thomas Pearce & Ellen Walker.
William was born in 1851 at Horton, Leek, Staffs, the son of Harriet & Richard Heath, a labourer at the coal pit.

In 1871 Sarah Ann & William were living at Beswick St, Tunstall, Staffs & William was an engine cleaner. They had a 1 year old son Richard.

By 1881 they had moved to 24 Haywood Place, Burslem, Staffs & William was now an oil refiner. The family had grown to include Richard, Sarah A (9), William H (7), Samuel (5), Clara (3) & Eliza H (9 months). Sadly little Eliza died later that year.

Sarah Ann died in Oct-December 1883, aged only 32, the death being registered at Wolstanton.

William remarried on December 8th, 1884 at Wrexham, Denbighshire.  His second wife was Margaret Smith, born c1851 at Wilderspool, Cheshire, the daughter of Mary & John Smith, a groom.

In 1891 William & his wife Margaret (39) were living at Bishopgate Green, Coventry. William was described as a steam engine fitter & children from his first marriage still at home were William, an iron polisher, Samuel, a printer’s assistant, & Ernest (9). Daughter Clara was listed with her aunt Harriet, Sarah’s sister, & family at the time of the census. There were 2 additional children, presumably from his second marriage – Maggie (4) & Harriet (2), both born in Coventry.

Son William married Ellen Shirley in 1896 in Coventry but Ellen died in 1903.  William remarried in 1905, his second wife being Inness A Wakefield, & in 1911 they were living in Gosford St, Coventry where William was an iron polisher (cycle & motor).

Son Samuel married Ann Elizabeth Beard in 1899 Burslem, Staffs & in 1911 they were living with Ann’s parents in Burslem & Samuel was a coal miner.  Samuel served with the Royal Engineers during WW1.

William & Margaret were still living in Coventry in 1901, at 86 Eagle St. William’s children from his first marriage had all left home. He & Margaret now had 3 children with them – Maggie, a silk weaver, Harriett & Ted (6). Daughter Sarah Ann was working as a domestic servant for a hosier & outfitter in Holy Trinity, Coventry in 1901.  Sarah Ann married George Slater, a carter of coal, in September 1902 in Coventry & by 1911 they & their daughter Phyllis were living in Oliver St, Coventry.

In 1911 William & Margaret were still living at the same address & William was now described as a millwright working for a motor manufacturer. Their 3 children were still at home & son Ted was now working as a machine hand at a motor manufacturer. It was noted on the census that Margaret had had 8 children, only 3 of whom survived.

Son Richard had married Rose Maria Paddy in 1888 in Coventry & by 1911 they & their 6 children were living in Cromwell St, Coventry & Richard was an iron polisher (cycle). Richard’s sister Clara Sophia married John Thomas Paddy, a miner, in 1901 in Coventry.  The 1911 census shows Clara & John living in Leicester St, Bedworth, Warks & of their 6 children sadly only son Thomas Henry was still alive.

William died on August 21st, 1927 at 86 Eagle St, Coventry, aged 76 & was buried August 25th at London Rd Cemetery, Coventry.  Probate was granted on September 26th, 1927 to Bernard Richard Masser, solicitor, & his son Samuel Heath, a licensed victualler.  His effects were £1,566.14s.8d.

Margaret died at 86 Eagle St & was buried on June 26th, 1934 at London Rd Cemetery, Coventry.
