We are grateful to the son of Joseph Thomas Horton [h.1.10.6.1] for information on this page
Henry Horton was the sixth child of Henry Horton & Sarah Ann Hancox born May 17th, 1858 at West Bromwich, Staffs.
By 1861 the family had moved to the High St, Knutton, Silverdale, Staffs. Henry had 4 sisters & 2 brothers at home.
At the time of the 1871 census Henry & his parents & brothers & sisters were living at Bank St, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. Henry, at the age of 13, was working at the forge. A report in the Staffordshire Sentinel & Commercial & general Advertiser of June 30th, 1877 states that Henry was a witness at an inquest into a terrible boiler explosion at the Ravensdale Old Iron Works, near Chatterley Station, where he worked. In the explosion at least 10 people were killed & many badly injured. Perhaps this prompted Henry’s change in occupation!
Henry married Mary Morris on August 5th, 1880, at St Paul's, Burslem, Staffs. Mary was born February 28th, 1859 at Burslem, Staffs, the daughter of Mary & Thomas Morris, a carter.
In 1881 Henry & Mary were living at North Rd, Burslem, Staffs & Henry was now an upholsterer.
By 1891 they were living at 50 Nile St, Burslem & Henry was still an upholster & also a furniture dealer. They now had 4 children – Joseph T (9), Judith M (7), Sarah A (4) & Clara (9 months).
At the time of the 1901 census they were living at 64 Hamil Rd, Burslem. Henry was a skilled cabinet maker & owned businesses employing up to 20 men. Their oldest son Joseph was a teacher at the elementary school & daughters Judith & Sarah (known as Sally) were described as ‘potters paintresses’. Also at home were Clara, Mary L (7), Ada (5) & a 1 month old son whose name was not known at the time.

In 1911 Henry & Mary were still living at the same address & Henry was still employed as an upholsterer. At home were Sarah Ann & Mary Lucy, both earthenware enamellers, Clara, an earthenware gilder, Ada, a dressmaker & Wilfrid Aidan (10) who was at school. It was noted on the census that Mary had had 9 children, only 7 of whom were still living. Son Joseph had become a clergyman by this time & was living in Bradford, Yorks. Daughter Judith had married John Colclough, a joiner, in 1907 & was living at Stockport, Cheshire with their daughter Linnie aged 2.
Daughter Sarah Ann married Stephen Farmer, a GPO fire officer, in April-June 1914 at Wolstanton. They were to have 3 children, Marjorie, Joan & Mabel.
Daughter Mary Lucy married Robert Pearson in July-September 1928 in Stockport, Lancs. They were to have 2 children, Margaret & Barbara. By 1939 Mary Lucy was widowed & working as a self-employed dressmaker in Bolton, Lancs. With her were her 2 school-age daughters.
Henry died on September 8th, 1934, aged 76, at Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs.
Widowed Mary was living with her unmarried daughter Ada at the time of the 1939 register & Ada was the proprietress of a gown shop in Castle St, Edgeley, Stockport, Cheshire.
Mary died in 1947, aged 88, at Stockport, Cheshire, her death probably being accelerated by the shock of flying bombs falling in the next street. Her funeral was at St Mark's Church, Edgeley & she was buried on August 15th.
