Jeremiah Horton [h.1.10.7]

Jeremiah Horton was the seventh child of Henry Horton & Sarah Ann Hancock born February*, 1860 at Silverdale, Wolstanton, Staffs.

In 1861 Jeremiah was living with his parents & siblings at Knutton, Silverdale, Staffs.

By the time of the 1871 census the family had moved to Bank St, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent.

Jeremiah was still living at home in Tunstall in 1881 but in a new street which had not been named or numbered. Jeremiah like his father was a forgeman.

According to the Mormon migration index Jeremiah emigrated to America in 1882, sailing from Liverpool on the ship Wyoming on September 2nd & arrived in New York on September 12th. 

On May 31st, 1886 married Mary McCart at Bear Lake, Idaho.  Mary was born March 17th, 1856 in Indiana, the daughter of Sarah Gerking & James Marion McCart.

In the US census of 1900 Jeremiah, known as Jerry, & Mary were living at Montpelier, Bear Lake, Idaho with their 4 children – Alfred J (12), Annie L (10), Sarah M (8), Lucy M (6), all of whom were born in Idaho. Jerry was a stationary engineman.

They were still living at Montpelier, Bear Lake in 1910 & Jerry’s occupation was ‘……. roundhouse railway’. All 4 children were still at home – Alfred was a switchman on the railway, Annie was a saleswoman at a dry goods store & Sarah & Lucy had no occupation. Jerry & Mary owned their own home which was not mortgaged.

Jerry died on June 12th, 1914 at Montpelier, Bear Lake & was buried on June 14th, 1914 at Montpelier Cemetery. His occupation on the death certificate was ‘locomotive hostler'. (A hostler was a person in charge of railway engines when not in use.)

In 1920 widowed Mary, aged 60, was still living in Montpelier with daughters Annie, a saleswoman, & Sarah, a servant for a private family. (Sarah had married Patrick Joseph Hulihan in 1914 but they had separated sometime between 1917 & 1920).  Also at home was Alfred, a yard master on the steam railroad, now married to May Fran (26), who was born in Idaho.  Daughter Lucy was also at home along with husband John Nicholas Myers (30) from Ohio, a conductor on the steam railroad, who she had married in April 1911.  Lucy & John had a daughter Mildred listed on the census whose age was given as 8.

Daughter Annie married Henry Robert Williamson on October 17th, 1929 at Paris, Bear Lake, Idaho. 

In 1930 Mary was again found in Montpelier & with her were daughter Lucy & husband John & their daughter Mildred.  The value of Mary’s home was given as $2,200 & she also owned a radio!

Mary died on January 18th, 1932 at Montpelier, Bear Lake & was buried January 21st, 1932 at Montpelier Cemetery.

By 1940 daughter Lucy, now divorced, was living with her widowed sister, Sarah Mildred, on Fifth St, Bear Lake.  No occupation was given for either of them.  Sarah was listed as Sarah M Johnson as she had remarried in 1921.  Her second husband Henry Edward Johnson died in July 1935.
