Ann Horton [h.1.3]

Ann Horton was the third child of Henry Horton & Esther Lines born January 30th, 1808 & christened June 14th, 1808 at St Phillip’s, Birmingham.

There is a record of a christening of Esther Maria Horton on October 31st, 1830 at Christ Church, West Bromwich to a mother Ann Horton. This was Ann’s illegitimate daughter who at the time of the 1841 census was living with her grandparents Henry & Esther at Walsall St, West Bromwich, Staffs. Ann herself at this time was employed as a servant for 60 year old Sarah Gilbert of independent means. She was living at New St, West Bromwich.

In 1851 Ann was still working as a house servant for Sarah Gilbert at the same address.

At the time of the 1861 census Ann was visiting her daughter Esther who had married William Lea Cooks in 1855. They were at 33 Charlotte St, Birmingham. Esther & William had a 4 year old daughter Ann Maria.

In 1871 Ann was working as a general servant for an 81 year old annuitant, Mary Hudson, at Bratt St, West Bromwich.

At the age of 73 Ann was again living with her daughter Esther & son-in-law William & 2 of their children in 1881. They were at Court 17, House 1, Whitmore St, Birmingham, where William was a carter (builder). Although she appears never to have married, when living with her son-in-law he lists Ann as ‘widowed’.

Ann continued to live with her daughter & family in 1891, now at 5 Back Roland Rd, Handsworth. She was still with them in 1901, by which time they had moved to 40 Prestbury Rd, Aston Manor, Birmingham. Ann was now 93 & described as a retired domestic housekeeper.

Sadly both Esther & husband William died in Oct-December 1901, both pre-deceasing Ann who lived until 1902.

Ann died on August 8th, 1902, aged 94, at 40 Prestbury Rd, Handsworth. Probate was granted on August 25th, 1901 to grandson Alfred Cooks, a stamper & piercer.  Her effects were £135.17s.

The children of Ann Horton were:

1.3.1 Esther Maria Horton christened October 31st, 1830 at Christ Church, West Bromwich, Staffs, died Oct-December 1901 at Birmingham
