Sarah Ann Horton was the eleventh child of James Horton & Elizabeth Hale born at Sedgley, Staffs & christened April 27th, 1856 at Gornall, Staffs.
By 1861 the family were living at Himley Rd, Lower Gornall, Sedgley & Sarah had 3 brothers & 2 sisters at home.
In 1871 Sarah & her parents were living at 49 New St, Lower Gornall, Sedgley & she was a nail maker. Her brother Samuel was still at home, as was sister Esther with her husband John Box.
Sarah married William Henry Hughes in 1876 at All Saints, Sedgley, Staffs. William was christened July 30th, 1854 at Lower Gornall, Staffs, the son of Mary Ann & William Hughes, a time keeper.
In 1881 William & Sarah were living with Sarah’s parents at New St, Lower Gornall & William was an engine driver. They had a 3 year old daughter Elizabeth.
By 1891 they were living at 47 Castle St, Coxley, Sedgley & William was still an engine driver. Daughter Elizabeth was still at home & living with them was Sarah’s widowed father James, an 81 year old shoemaker.
Sarah & William were still living at 47 Castle St in 1901 & William was now described as an engine driver at the colliery. Daughter Elizabeth was still at home.
In 1911 Sarah & William were still at the same address. William was now described as a stationary engine driver at the clay pit. It was noted on the census that Sarah had had 8 children, but sadly only Elizabeth was living.
Daughter Elizabeth had married Benjamin Taylor in Jan-March 1902, the marriage being registered at Dudley. At the time of the 1911 census Elizabeth & Benjamin were living at 2 Mount Pleasant St, Coseley, Staffs & Benjamin was a clerk at a colour manufacturers. Benjamin was born April-June 1879 at Coseley, Staffs, the son of Lucy & Joseph Taylor, an iron moulder. Elizabeth & Benjamin had 2 children – Joseph Reginald (7) & Sarah Muriel (1).
William died in Oct-December 1932 in Sedgley.
The 1939 register shows widowed Sarah living with her daughter Elizabeth & husband Benjamin Taylor & family in 1939. They were living at 41 Mount Pleasant St, Coseley.
Sarah died in Oct-December 1947 in Sedgley.
