James Horton [h.1.4]

James Horton was the fourth child of Henry Horton & Esther Lines christened September 16th, 1810 at All Saints, West Bromwich. Staffs.

James married Elizabeth Hale on June 17th, 1832 at St Thomas, Dudley, Worcs. Elizabeth was christened on April 15th, 1810 at Sedgley, Staffs, the daughter of Jane Collins & Joseph Hale.

In 1841 James, a cordwainer, was living at Toll House, Gornall Wood, Lower Gornall, Sedgley, Staffs with his 2 year old son Joseph. His wife, Elizabeth was not with him at the time of the census as she was visiting her parents-in-law, Henry & Esther Horton at Walsall St, West Bromwich. Elizabeth had with her daughters Jane (6) & Esther (6 months). At the time of the 1841 census son William, aged just 4 years, was living with William & Jane Hodgetts at Pensnett, Kingswinford, Staffs. William Hodgetts had married Jane Hale in 1815 at Sedgley, although the precise relationship of Jane to William’s mother Elizabeth is uncertain.

James & Elizabeth were still living at Gornall Wood in 1851. Children at home were William (14), a labourer, Joseph, also a labourer, Esther, John (5) & Elizabeth (1).

By 1861 the family had moved to Himley Rd, Lower Gornall, Sedgley & James was still a cordwainer. Sons Joseph & John were both working as labourers & also at home were Elizabeth, Samuel (8), Sarah (5) & a granddaughter Emily (6). Emily was the illegitimate child of daughter Jane.

By 1871 James & Elizabeth (Herter in Ancestry.co.uk index) were living at 49 New St, Lower Gornall. At home were Samuel, an agricultural labourer, Sarah, a nail maker & also daughter Esther now married to John Box (23), an agricultural labourer.

James & Elizabeth were still living at New St in 1881. Living in the same dwelling at number 49a was their daughter Sarah Ann & her husband William Henry Hughes, an engine driver, with their 3 year old daughter Elizabeth.

Elizabeth of New Street, died in 1890, aged 80, & was buried on March 12th at St James the Great Churchyard, Lower Gornal.

By 1891 widowed James, now 81, was still living with his daughter Sarah & husband William & grand daughter Elizabeth Hughes. They were living at Castle St, Sedgley & James was still described as a shoemaker.

James, aged 86, died at 47 Castle St, Roseville, Coseley in 1896  & was buried March 14th at St James the Great Churchyard, Lower Gornal.
