Sarah Horton [h.1.5.1]

Sarah Horton was the first child of Jeremiah Horton & Mary Ann Bailey born November 5th, 1837 & christened November 19th, 1837 at Christ Church, West Bromwich, Staffs.

In 1841 Sarah & her parents & sister Selina were living at Hadley’s Fordsough, West Bromwich.

They were still at the same address in 1851 & Sarah was now working as a nail presser. Her sister Selina was still at home & she now had another sister, Amelia (6).

Sarah married Emmanuel Whitehouse at All Saints, West Bromwich in 1857. Emmanuel was christened March 22nd, 1835 at All Saints, West Bromwich, the son of Rebecca & John Whitehouse, an engine fitter.

Sarah & Emmanuel (Whiteham in Ancestry.co.uk index) were living at Roebuck St, West Bromwich in 1861 & Emmanuel was a turner of tin. Emmanuel’s parents were also living in Roebuck St & in adjacent Birmingham Rd was Sarah’s father, sister Amelia & step mother, Sarah.

In 1871 they were still at Roebuck St, & Emmanuel was now an engineer in a factory & Sarah was a laundress. Visiting at the time of the census were Harriett Whitehouse Bird, a 14 year old spring maker & 8 year old Mary Evans.

Sarah & Emmanuel were living with her father Jeremiah, a coffee mill maker, at 24 Birmingham Rd in 1881 & Emmanuel was now described as a fitter & turner. Living with them was 5 year old Selina Jones, daughter of Sarah’s sister Amelia & her husband William Jones, a hotel keeper. Selina was born in Llangollen, N. Wales which is where her parents & 2 younger sisters were living at this time.

Sarah & Emmanuel continued to live at 24 Birmingham Rd after the death of Jeremiah in 1882. The 1891 census shows Emmanuel was still a fitter & turner & niece Selina Jones was still living with them.

They were still at the same address in 1901 (listed as Whitchan in Ancestry.co.uk index) & Selina was still with them. Sarah & Emmanuel appear not to have had any family.

Sarah died sometime prior to 1911. At the time of the 1911 census widowed Emmanuel was still living at 24 Birmingham Rd, West Bromwich with niece Selina. Selina, however, was now married to Albert Edward Dance & they had 2 children. The children – Theodora Catherine M (8) & Marjorie Kittie E (4) were both with their mother but husband Albert was not with his family. His whereabouts are unknown.

Emmanuel died on April 7th, 1920, aged 85, at Birmingham Rd, West Bromwich. Probate was granted on July 30th, 1920 at Lichfield to niece Selina Catherine Dance (wife of Albert Edward Dance) & Arthur Arter, solicitor’s clerk.  His effects were £1070.17s.
