Jeremiah Horton was the fifth child of Henry Horton & Esther Lines christened April 26th, 1812 at All Saints, West Bromwich. Staffs.
Jeremiah married Mary Ann Bailey on April 5th, 1835 at St Martin, Birmingham, Warks. Mary was christened March 12th, 1815 at All Saints, West Bromwich, Staffs, the daughter of Mary Bibb & George Bailey. The IGI record of Jeremiah & Mary’s wedding notes Mary’s name as Mary Ann Bailey Bibb.
In 1841 Jeremiah & Mary were living at Hadley’s Fordsough, West Bromwich & Jeremiah was described as a fitter. They had 2 children – Sarah (3) & Selina (2 months). Jeremiah is listed in the Poll Books & Electoral Registers of 1841 as living at Spon Lane & having freedhold land & building at Lower Lyng. This listing continued each year until 1849.
They were still at the same address in 1851 but Jeremiah was now working as a coffee mill dresser. Daughter Sarah was working as a nail presser. Selina was still at home & there was a new daughter Amelia (6).
Mary Ann died in 1852, aged 40, & was buried on September 19th, at Holy Trinity, West Bromwich.

Jeremiah married again. His new wife was Sarah Cutler & they were married at All Saints, West Bromwich on May 1st, 1854. Sarah was christened September 9th, 1810 at West Bromwich, the daughter of Hannah & John Cutler.
Jeremiah appears to have been a patron of Queen’s Hospital, Birmingham. There are a number of newspaper references to his generous donations (e.g Staffordshire Sentinel & Commercial General Advertiser of August 18th, 1855: ‘…a vote of thanks was recorded to Mr Jeremiah Horton of West Bromwich for a donation of £5 to the general fund of the Hospital’). Jeremiah is also recorded as making a donation of £2 (being a second donation) to the Birmingham & Midland Eye Institution (Birmingham Journal, May 2nd 1857).
In 1861 Jeremiah & Sarah were living at Birmingham Rd, West Bromwich & he was still a coffee mill maker. Jeremiah’s daughter Amelia was with them & was a pupil teacher. Jeremiah was listed in the Poll Books & Electoral Registers of 1861 as living at Roebuck St (adjacent to Birmingham Rd) & having freehold house & land at part of Dunkirk Estate.
Jeremiah & Sarah continued to live at Birmingham Rd & they were on their own at the time of the 1871 census. Jeremiah was still a coffee mill maker.
Sarah died on June 10th 1873, aged 64, at Birmingham Rd, West Bromwich & was buried on June 14th at Holy Trinity, West Bromwich. In July of that year an article in the Birmingham Daily Post noted that Jeremiah was serving as a member of the West Bromwich Liberal committee.
Widowed Jeremiah was living at 24 Birmingham Rd at the time of the 1881 census & still making coffee mills. At the same address was his daughter Sarah & her husband Emmanuel Whitehouse whom she had married in 1857. Also living with them was his granddaughter Selina Jones (5).
Jeremiah died on July 6th, 1882, aged 70, at Birmingham Rd, West Bromwich. He was buried on July 10th at Holy Trinity, West Bromwich. His will was proved on August 15th, 1882 at Lichfield by his executors Emmanuel Whitehouse (son-in-law) of Birmingham Rd, a fitter, & Reuben Woodward of Overend St, West Bromwich, a builder. His effects were £164.17s.2d.
