Richard Horton [h.1.7]

Richard Horton was the seventh child of Henry Horton & Esther Lines christened August 18th, 1816 at All Saints, West Bromwich. Staffs.

In 1841 Richard was living at home with his parents (Henry & Esther Horter in Ancestry.co.uk index) at Walsall St, West Bromwich, Staffs where he was an engineer. There were 4 other brothers at home as well as 2 sisters & a visiting sister-in-law.

Richard married Mary Phipps on April 18th, 1846 at All Saints, West Bromwich. Witnesses at the wedding were Esther Horton & William Phipps. Mary was christened February 13th, 1814 at Tipton, Staffs, the daughter of William & Ann Phipps.

Richard & Mary (Harton in Ancestry.co.uk index) were living at Grant Village, West Bromwich in 1851 with daughter Sarah (3) & son William (1). Richard’s occupation was given as engineer.

In 1861 Richard & Mary were living at Grout St, West Bromwich. Richard’s occupation was an engine driver but he was described as an invalid in the census. They had 3 children at home at this time - William (11), Richard (9) & 'Mary' (5). 'Mary' was never found in any future census & could be a mistaken entry for Henry who was 5 years old & was not found at this time. Daughter Sarah (13) was visiting her uncle David Phipps & his wife Mary J, also living in West Bromwich. Living next door to uncle David was David’s widowed mother Ann Phipps (75).

By 1871 the family had moved to Dunkirk Rd, West Bromwich & again Richard was described as an engine driver in the census, but diseased. At home were Sarah (23), a school mistress & Henry (15), a pupil teacher. Next door was Mary’s brother David Phipps (50), a grocer, & his wife Mary Jane.

At the time of the 1881 census Richard was at 103 New Rd, Tipton, Staffs & was described as an iron worker. His wife Mary was visiting their daughter Sarah, now married to John Fisher (not at home in census), & her children John & Mary. The Fishers were living at 52 Whitehall Rd, West Bromwich. Once again Sarah’s uncle David Phipps & his wife were living next door at 48 Whitehall Rd.

Richard died on December 6th, 1884 at 52 Whitehall Rd, West Bromwich, aged 68 & was buried at St Peter’s, West Bromwich on December 9th, 1884. His occupation on his death certificate was engine driver & the cause of death was senile decay. The informant was W Horton (possibly son William) of St Pauls Rd, West Smethwick.

Mary died on May 7th, 1888 at 52 Whitehall Rd, aged 74. The cause of death was ‘hemiplegia, exhaustion’ & the informant was son Henry Horton of 53 Upper Normacot Rd, Longton.
