Margaret Hall [ha.4]

Margaret Hall was the fourth child of John Hall & Margaret Slack christened May 11th, 1845 at South Hetton, Co Durham.

Margaret was living at South Hetton in 1851 with her parents, 3 brothers & 1 sister. Her father was a coal miner.

She was still at home at South Hetton in 1861 with 2 brothers & 2 sisters.

Margaret married Henry Sayer in Jan-March 1868, the marriage being registered at Sunderland. Henry was born April-June 1846 at Kendal, Westmorland. Henry was the son of Jane & William Sayer, a green grocer. The Sayers were living at Thornley, Co Durham at the time of the 1861 census & at that time Henry was working for his father as a grocer’s assistant.

In 1871 Margaret & Henry were living at Flat Engine, Warden Law, Co Durham where Henry was now an engine driver. They had 2 children – William (3) & John Hall (2 months).

By 1881 Margaret & Henry had moved to Front St, Whitburn, Co Durham & Henry was now described as an engineman. They now had 6 children – William, John Hall, Mary Ellen (8), Margaret (5), James (2) & Henry (3 months).

Margaret & Henry had moved once more by the time of the 1891 census & were living at 31 Thorpe St, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland where Henry was working as an engineer fitter. At home were William, a blacksmith, John, a general labourer, Mary Ellen, Margaret, James, Henry, Joseph (7) & Frederick (3).

Son William, a farrier, married Jane Horshin on February 14th, 1894 at Venerable Bede Church, Monkwearmouth. Daughter Margaret married George Youll Pyle, a cabinet maker in 1897 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne & in 1910 Margaret, George & family emigrated to Australia.

In 1901 Henry & Margaret were in Southwick, Sunderland & were living at 12 Keats Avenue. Henry’s occupation was given as engine minder at colliery. Son James was still at home & was a blacksmith at the shipyard, & son Joseph was a shipwright’s apprentice. Frederick was also still living at home.

Son Joseph married Susannah Henderson in 1909 in Sunderland & like sister Margaret he also emigrated to Australia.

In 1911 Margaret was living with her daughter Mary Ellen, who had married Alfred Frame Armstrong in April-June 1894, & their 3 children.  They were living at 42 Grosvenor St, Southwick, Sunderland where Alfred was a linotype operator.  Margaret’s status in the census was given as married, but Henry could not be found. 

Margaret died in April-June 1917, aged 72, at Sunderland.

There is a death for Henry Sayer, aged 78, of 33 Grosvenor Street, Sunderland in Jan-March 1925.
