James Hall was the second child of Barbara Wilson & James Hall born on April 17th & christened May 22nd 1808 at Bothal with Hebburn, near Morpeth.
James married Sarah Baldwin (nee Stow), a widow on May 12th, 1833 at Hetton-le-Hole, Co Durham. Witnesses at the wedding were William Robinson & George Wilkie. Sarah Stow was born May 23rd, 1803 at Keighley, Yorks & christened June 12th, 1803 at All Saints, Bingley, Yorks, the daughter of Jonas Stow, a blacksmith of Castlefield. Her first husband was John Baldwin, a weaver, who she married in Burnley, Lancs in 1824. There is a burial for John Baldwin aged 29 in Hetton-le-Hole in September 1832.
By 1841 James & Sarah were living in South Hetton, Haswell, Co Durham where James was a coal miner. With them were children William (15), John (10), James (6), Jane (5), John (4) & Margery (Margaret? 12). William, John & Margaret were presumably children from Sarah’s first marriage to John Baldwin.
Sadly James, aged 40, was killed in a gas explosion at East Murton Colliery on August 15th, 1848 & was buried on August 17th at Easington. Fourteen men were killed & James was a deputy overman at that time. Also killed in the accident was James’ step-son William Baldwin who had only just married that year.
The 1851 census shows widowed Sarah living in South Hetton, Haswell & working as a glover. With her were children James (16), a coal miner, Jane (14), John (13), a coal miner & Barbara (9). Also with her was Jonas Hall, aged 20 & born in Burnley, a coal miner. This was in fact Sarah’s son from her first marriage, Jonas Baldwin.
Son James, a coal miner, married Isabella Phillips in 1855 in Easington. By 1891 James was widowed & living in Hoyland Nether, Yorks. He married again in 1892, his second wife being Sarah A Hill & in 1901 they were living at 10 Chapel St, Hoyland Nether, Yorks.
Daughter Barbara married Robert Cram, a coal miner, in Oct-December 1859 at Houghton-le-Spring. The 1911 census shows that Barbara & Robert had had 12 children, 8 of whom were still living.
Sarah was still living in South Hetton in 1861. No family were with her but there was a 35 year old lodger, Robert Old, a tailor.
There is a burial for Sarah Hall age 62 on October 29th, 1863 at South Hetton.
