Elizabeth Mays [m.1.2]

Elizabeth Mays was the second child of John May & Mary Marchant christened May 5th, 1833 at Croydon.

In 1851 Elizabeth was house servant to William Symonds (proprieter of houses) & his wife Mary living at New Lane, Croydon.

Elizabeth married Robert Hubbard on September 24th, 1854 at All Saints, Upper Norwood, Croydon. Witnesses at the wedding were James Quittenden & Emily Hubbard. Robert, who was a labourer, was the son of William & Mary Hubbard christened February 25th,1830 at St John the Baptist, Croydon. Robert had been a witness at the wedding of Elizabeth’s sister Mary Ann Mays to William Henry Grove in 1852.

In 1861 Elizabeth & Robert, a labourer, were living at Church Rd, Croydon with 2 daughters – Elizabeth (5) & Harriett (3). They had a lodger called William Long, aged 18.

By 1871 Robert was a carman & he & Elizabeth were still living at Church Rd & now had a son William, aged 8. Daughter Elizabeth had left home to become a servant for Ann Cox, an annuitant, at Ferndale, St Peters Rd, Croydon. Daughter Harriett (Harrick on Ancestry.co.uk index) was a nurse for William Maidlow, a corn factor, & family at Elm Lodge, Park Hill Rise, Croydon.

Elizabeth & Robert were still at Church Rd in 1881 along with daughter Elizabeth (25), a dressmaker & son William (18) a clerk. Harriett was working as a cook for Thomas Muggeridge, a corn merchant, & his family who lived at The Vale, Beckenham, Kent.

Robert was employed by Mr Ebbutt, an upholsterer in 1881.  While driving a cart for his employer Robert ran over a young boy cyclist who had fallen from his bike after colliding with a pedestrian.  Unfortunately the boy suffered a fractured thigh. Daughter Elizabeth married Edwin Davey, a joiner, in July-September 1882 at Croydon. They continued to live in Croydon & had 2 children by 1901. In Jan-March 1883 Harriett married Austin Greenwood Sherwood , a plumber at Croydon. They lived until at least 1901 in Beckenham Rd , Beckenham , Kent , but had no family.

Robert, still a carman, continued to live at Church Rd with Elizabeth, with only son William, a clerk, at home at the time of the 1891 census. A 10 year old nephew, Frederick Fry, was also recorded on the census. Frederick was the grandson of Elizabeth’s sister Mary Mays. Frederick’s father, Albert Edward Fry, had recently died so this could be the reason for his visit.

In 1901 Robert (69) had become a furniture shop assistant & he & Elizabeth were still at Church Rd. William was still living at home & was a commercial clerk.

Robert died Jan-March, 1908 aged 77, his death being registered at Croydon.

In 1911 widowed Elizabeth was living with her son William at 55 Northcote Rd, Croydon.  William was a commercial clerk for a coal merchant.

Daughter Elizabeth & husband Edwin Davey were living at 9 Arundel Rd, Croydon in 1911 with son Charles Frank, a joiner & daughter Nellie Rose, a telephone operator.

Daughter Harriett & husband Austin Sherwood were still living at Beckenham Rd in 1911 where Austin was a plumber.  They had no family. 

Elizabeth died in Jan-March 1917, aged 83, at Croydon.

Son William died on September 23rd, 1918 & administration of his estate was granted to his sister Elizabeth Davey.

m.1.2.3 William Hubbard born September 27th, 1862 at Croydon & christened January 25th, 1863 at at St John the Baptist, Croydon; died September 23rd, 1918 at 224 White Horse Road, Croydon
