Jane Pallister [p.1.2.4.2.4]

Jane Pallister was the fourth child of John Pallister & Tamar Lowes born April 14th, 1812 at Windlestone & christened May 17th, 1812 at Auckland St Andrew, Co Durham.

Jane married John Young on October 26th, 1834 at Auckland St Andrews.  John was born c1810 at Staindrop, Co Durham, the son of Elizabeth Wade & Robert Young.

Jane & John were living in South Church Village, St Andrew Auckland in 1841 where John was a butcher.  They had 2 sons – John (5) & Robert (2).

In 1851 John & Jane were living at 4 Gilesgate, Durham City & John was a butcher.  With them were sons John (15), Robert (12) & George (3) & daughter Eleanor (8).

John, aged 47, died on February 12th, 1858 at Court Lane, Durham City & was buried on February 14th at St Oswald’s, Durham.

By 1861 widowed Jane was living at 20 New Elvet, Durham & was described as a butcher.  Sons John & Robert were with her also working as butchers, & daughter Eleanor was described as an assistant.  Son George, daughter Catherine J (9) & son William (6) were all scholars.

Jane was still working as a butcher in 1871 now at 15 Framwellgate St, Durham. At home were son George, also working as a butcher, Eleanor, a milliner & dressmaker, & William, a solicitor’s general clerk.

By 1881 Jane was living at 28 Sutton St, Durham & continued to work as a butcher.  Children with her were Eleanor, George & William who all worked as butchers.  Also with them at the time of the census was a grandson, John William Coe (5) (son of daughter Eleanor & her husband Robert Scott Coe) & they had a general domestic servant.

An article in the Durham County Advertiser of December 19th 1884 reveals how the family’s butchering shops had expanded in Durham. It quotes ‘Mr R (Robert) Young’s shop in the Market Place being admirably stocked with prime oxen, bred & fed by the Earl of Durham, Mr George Young of New Elvet had beef & mutton of extremely fine quality fed by Lord Boyne, & finally a choice display of beef & mutton in the shop of Mrs Jane Young of Flass St & Sutton St which for quality cannot be surpassed.’

Jane died in 1889 at Sutton St, Durham & was buried on March 31st at St Margaret’s, Durham.
