Mary Eleanor Pallister [p.]

Mary Eleanor (Ellen) Pallister was the second child of Robert Speed Pallister & Elizabeth Thubron, born January 26th, 1865 & christened Mary Ellen Pallister on February 19th, 1865 at St Peter’s, Wallsend.

In 1871 Mary Ellen was living at the Davey Inn, Wallsend where her father was the innkeeper.  She had a younger sister Sarah Annie.

Mary Ellen’s mother died in 1880 & his father remarried in March 1881.  At the time of the 1881 census Mary Ellen was living with 2 sisters, father & step-mother Hannah at James Mather St, Westoe, South Shields.  Mary Ellen’s’s father had now returned to being a miner & she & her sister Sarah Annie were both pupil teachers.

Mary Ellen married James Glanville on October 6th, 1883 at All Saints, Fulwell, Sunderland, Co Durham.  James was  christened December 30th, 1860 at Newlyn, Cornwall, the son of Anne (Nanny) Ellery & James Glanville, a lead/coal miner.

By 1891 James & Mary Ellen were living at 8 Sophy St, Southwick, Sunderland where James was a coal miner.  They had 3 sons – James R (6), Thomas (2) & John (3 months).

In 1901 James & Mary Ellen together with children James, a coal miner, Thomas, John & 2 more sons, Richard (6) & Hector (6 months) were living at 7 Long Row, Sunderland.  James was now a lamp keeper above ground.

The family were at 7 Southwick Rd, Sunderland in 1911 & James was now a lamp examiner.  There were 4 children at home – John, an electrician at the colliery, Richard, ‘dregging up’ below ground at the colliery, Hector, a scholar & Wilfred (3).  It was noted on the census that they had had 10 children, only 5 of whom were still alive.

James died on April 17th, 1913 at 7 Southwick Rd, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, aged 52.  He was buried at Mere Knolls Cemetery, Fulwell, Sunderland.

p.  Elizabeth Thubrun Glanville born June 27th, 1898 & christened 14th July, 1898 at Southwick, Sunderland; died April-June 1900 in Sunderland
p.  Hector Macdonald Glanville born October 21st, 1900 & christened November 15th, 1900 in Sunderland; died May 1986 in Sunderland
p.  Ruth Pallister Glanville born April-June 1905 in Sunderland; died Jan-March 1906 in Sunderland
p.  Wilfred Glanville born Oct-December 1907 in Sunderland; died September 1917 in Sunderland


Son Richard enlisted in the Wearside Royal Field Artillery in 1915 & served for the duration of WW1.  He spent time in Selonica, Greece & served as a gunner & driver. 

Mary Ellen, 57, remarried in Jan-March 1922 in Sunderland.  Her second husband was John A Wright, born July 3rd, 1861.

The 1939 register shows Mary Eleanor & husband John living at 14 Spencer St, Consett.  John was a retired iron smelter.

Son Hector was a member of the Monkwearmouth Temperance Cycling Club.  The 1939 register shows him, his wife Louisa & son Ernest living at 11 Clive St, Sunderland.    Hector was a colliery pony putter. 

Son James Robert & his wife, Elizabeth J (nee Henshaw) & son Joseph were living at 44 Hood St, Sunderland at the time of the 1939 register.  James was working at the colliery & described as a shifter in the coal mine. James died as the result of a mining accident at Hylton Colliery on June 29th, 1946.  He was trapped by a set of tubs in the mine & suffered serious injuries.  He was buried at Mere Knolls Cemetry. 

Mary Eleanor Wright, a widow, of 14 Spencer St, Consett, Co Durham died on February 5th, 1948 at Winterton Emergency Hospital, Sedgefield, Co Durham. Probate was granted to sons John Glanville, electrician, & Hector Macdonald Glanville, coal miner.  Her effects were £459.6s.8d.
