Ralph Speed Pallister was the fourth child of William Speed Pallister & Mary Bellwood born April-June 1870 at Shotton, Co Durham.
Ralph & his family were living at Railway Row, Shotton in 1871.
In 1881 the family were living at 1 Whitley Row, Whitley, Northumberland.
By 1891 Ralph was still living at home with his parents & brothers & sisters at 26 Melton Terr, New Hartley, Seaton Delaval, Northumberland. Ralph was a coal miner.
Ralph married Jane Swinburne in Jan-March 1894, the marriage being registered at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Jane was born September 28th, 1871 at Newburn, Northumberland, the daughter of Jane & William Swinburne, a coal miner.
In 1901 Ralph & Jane were living at 10 Hawthorn Terr, Walbottle, Northumberland & Ralph was now a stationary engineman. They had 3 children – William (6), Elizabeth (3) & Mary (1).
Ralph & Jane were still at North Walbottle, Newburn in 1911 & were now living at 1 Coaly Hill Terrace. Ralph was an engineman above ground working with air compressor & fan engine. Son William was an underground rope boy at the colliery working with ‘endless rope' – a steel cable used to connect the coal tubs for moving around. Lizzie & Mary were both at school & they now had 3 more daughters – Jane (10), Violet (7) & Ada (2).
Ralph died on August 27th, 1913, aged 43, at 1 Coaly Hill Terrace, Walbottle & was buried at Lemington Cemetery, Newburn on August 31st. His death was notified by son William Pallister.
Daughter Mary married Robert H Hall, an electric tram driver, in July-September 1920 & the 1939 register shows them living at 49 Glenthorne Rd, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. With them was Mary’s sister Ada who was working as a retail dealer in groceries.
Son William emigrated to Canada on a £10 migrant ticket on August 24th, 1929. He sailed from Greenock in Scotland to Quebec on the ‘Doric’ & gave his occupation as engineman & his last address as 18 Richmond Terrace, Walbottle, Newburn.
The 1939 register shows widowed Jane living at 18 Richmond Terrace, Newburn & described as incapacitated. With her was daughter Violet who was a cashier & book keeper at a boot factory. Also with her was daughter Elizabeth & her husband Matthew N Temperley, an electric crane driver.
Jane, of 18 Richmond Terrace, died April 5th, 1946, aged 74, & was also buried at Lemington Cemetery on April 8th, 1946. Son-in-law Matthew Temperley was present at her death.
Daughter Ada married George Gray in November 1949 in Northumberland South.
There is a record of William Pallister born March 28th, 1895 returning from Montreal, Quebec, Canada to the UK, arriving at Greenock on May 16th, 1960. With William who was retired was a wife, Frances C Pallister, born September 30th, 1895. The couple were both Canadian citizens and intended to visit the UK for 3 months, the address being given as 12 Kinnaird Avenue, Denton Burn, Newcastle.
