William Speed Pallister was the fifth child of William Speed Pallister & Mary Bellwood born February 13th, 1873 at Hebburn, Co Durham.
In 1881 the family were living at 1 Whitley Row, Whitley, Northumberland.
By 1891 William was still living at home with his parents & brothers & sisters at 26 Melton Terr, New Hartley, Seaton Delaval, Northumberland. William was a coal miner.
In 1901 William was still living at home at North View, Walbottle with his parents & brothers & sisters. He was now a colliery banksman.
William married Sarah Cowperthwaite in July-September 1901, the marriage being registered at Castle Ward, Northumberland. Sarah was born in ‘Barclay’, USA on September 18th, 1871, the daughter of Jane & Anthony Cowperthwaite, a coal miner. At the time of the 1901 census Sarah was a school teacher boarding at Ashington, Northumberland, however her parents were living at Newburn (in Castle Ward district), Northumberland.
In 1911 William & Sarah were living at 57 Beaumont Terrace, Westerhope, Newcastle-upon-Tyne & William was a weighman above ground at the coal mine. They had 4 children – Mary Jane (8), Isobel (7), Sarah (4) & William (1).
According to the London Gazette of March 11th, 1920 Sjt William S. Pallister (regiment #58695) of the 130th Hy. By., Royal Garrison Artillery (Newburn-on-Tyne) was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for:
‘Conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty, notably near Catillon, on 4th November, 1918, when he succeeded in keeping his gun in action continuously under heavy shell fire. In spite of casualties his gun was never once out of action.’
Daughter Sarah married John Harvey Brown in 1927 at Whorlton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The 1939 register shows Sarah & John living at 60 Collinwood, Ilford, Essex where John was a dock foreman. Their son, Maxwell Fenwick Brown, had been born in Essex in 1936.
Daughter Mary Jane married Joseph W Watson in Oct-December 1929 at Castle Ward, Northumberland. The 1939 register shows Mary & Joseph living at 78 Chipchase Crescent, Newburn where Joseph was a brewer’s drayman.
Daughter Elsie married Donald Ireland in July-September 1938 in Northumberland South. The 1939 register shows Elsie & Donald living at Highways, Darras Hall, Ponteland, Northumberland, where Donald was a nurseryman at a market garden.
The 1939 register shows William & Sarah living at 57 Beaumont Terrace, Newburn & William was a colliery weighman above ground. With them was daughter Isobel, a builders cashier, who was now married to Thomas Scott.
There is a record of William Pallister, born April 28th, 1909, living at 56 Cubley Rd, Birmingham at the time of the 1939 register. This could be son William & he was working in National Health Insurance.

William, of 57 Beaumont Terrace, died June 1st, 1952 at Gresham House, Park Terrace, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He was buried at Lemington Cemetery, Newburn on June 4th, 1952. Administration of his will was granted to his widow Sarah on August 9th, 1952 & his effects were £295.12s.
Sarah died in December 1952 & was also buried at Lemington Cemetery, Newburn on December 29th, 1952.
