Isabella Pallister [p.1.6.3.1.3]

Isabella Pallister was the third child of Robert Pallister & Margaret Speed born January 15th, 1812 at Black Fell, Washington & christened February 23rd, 1812 at Washington, Co Durham.

Isabella married Thomas Simm on March 14th, 1835 at All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. A witness at the wedding was Isabella Pallister. Thomas was born c1812 in Northumberland.

In 1841 Isabella & Thomas were living at Seaton Burn Colliery, Westslade, Longbenton & Thomas was a miner. They had 2 children – Robert (5) & Thomas (8 months). They had a 13 year old servant Alice Mason.

Thomas & Isabella had moved south to Co Durham by 1844 when Thomas died at Wingate Grange in April of that year.  He was buried on April 12th at Wingate. 

In 1851 widowed Isabella was living at Wingate Colliery with 3 children Robert, Thomas & Elizabeth (6). They had a lodger Robert Baggelen.

Isabella had moved to Trimdon Colliery Cottages by 1861 & Thomas, a coal miner, & Elizabeth were still at home. They had a 19 year old lodger Jacob Gent, a coal miner. Son Robert, a coal miner, had married Jane Ann Richardson by this time & was living with his wife in Kelloe.

No records for Isabella have as yet been found after this time. There is a record of Robert Simm (aged   27) & Thomas Simm (aged 23) emigrating to USA on the ‘Olympus’ arriving in New York on February 12th, 1864.

The 1880 census of USA shows son Robert, now with his wife Jane, living in 35 th Ward, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. They had 4 children all born in Pennsylvania – Christina (18), James R (7), Thomas G (4) & Isabell (2). Robert was a coal miner. Also living in Pennsylvania, but at Penn, Allegheny was brother Thomas (also a coal miner), his wife Mary, & their children. Daughter Elizabeth J (20) was born in England, but their 4 other daughters – Bella (11), Mary J (9), Ellie S (7) & Rachel (3) – were all born in Pennsylvania.

There is also a record for Robert P & Jane A Simm in the 1900 USA census & for Thomas Simm in the 1910 census of Penn, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Thomas is described as a 70 year old widower whose occupation was a coal miner.
