Hannah Pallister was the sixth child of William Pallister & Sarah Harker born March 10th, 1859 at Heworth, Co Durham.
Hannah & her parents & her brothers & sisters were living at Heworth Colliery in 1861.
By 1871 the family had moved to Usworth & were living at Railway Row. Hannah was still living at home with her 3 brothers & 2 sisters. Her father William, a coal miner, died later that year, aged 48.
In 1881 Hannah’s mother Sarah married again. At the time of the census Hannah was living with her mother & step-father James Hall at Tunstall, near Sunderland, Co Durham. Hannah’s brother William, a coal miner, was also living with them as well as a 3 year old named Peter Pallister, the illegitimate child of Hannah's sister Elizabeth Ann. Also with them were some of James’s children from his previous marriage – Robert (18), a coal miner, Alice (13), Jane (11) & James (8).
Hannah married Matthew Harley in April-June 1881 at Stockton. Matthew was born c1851 at Witton Gilbert, Co Durham, the son of Jane & Robert Harley, a farmer.
In 1891 Hannah & Matthew were living at Garmondsway Moor, Sedgefield & Matthew was a cart man. They had a daughter Sarah Jane (8) & son Robert William (3).
By 1901 the family had moved to Kelloe, Easington, Co Durham & Matthew was now a horsekeeper at the colliery below ground. As well as Sarah & Robert they now had Eleanor (8), Richard P (6), Matthew (3) & James Edwin (1).
Hannah & Robert were living at East Hetton Colliery, Coxhoe, Co Durham in 1911 & Matthew was still a horse keeper at the colliery, now above ground. At home were Robert, a stonework miner, Nellie (Eleanor), Richard, a miner driver, Matthew, James & George (8) who were all at school. It was noted on the census that Hannah had had 8 children only 6 of whom were still living.
Son Robert was killed in action on July 18th, 1916 while serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers during WW1. He is commemorated at Thiepval Cemetery, Picardie, France.
Matthew died aged 81 & was buried on December 4th 1932 at St Paul’s, Cassop, Co Durham. He is commemorated at Quarrington Hill Chapel.
At the time of the 1939 register widowed Hannah was living alone at 64 Dene View, Cassop.
Hannah died in Jan-March 1942 at Cassop, Co Durham.
