John Pallister [p.1.6.3.6.9.5]

John Pallister was the fifth child of Robert Pallister & Margaret Roscamp born November 16th, 1873 at Wrekenton & christened December 14th, 1873 at Eighton Banks, Gateshead, Co Durham.

In 1881 John, his 4 sisters & 2 brothers & parents were living at Boundary House, Gateshead.  His father Robert was a blacksmith.

By 1891 the family had moved to Coach Road, Gateshead & John was working as a school teacher.

John obtained an M.A. from the University of Cambridge & by 1901 he had become a clergyman in the Church of England.  He was living at 34 Russell St, Stockton.

John married Mary Ann Eliza Emmeline Feast on July 31st, 1906 at Crayke Church, Easingwold, N. Yorks. Witnesses at the wedding were Mary’s brother, F Bonner Feast, Muriel Bartlett & Arthur W Lister, curate of Stockton.  Interestingly John gave his father’s occupation as ‘merchant’.  Interestingly John gave his father’s occupation as ‘merchant’.  At the time of the wedding John was Tees Chaplain of the Missions to Seamen. Mary Emmeline was born July 21st, 1883 at Papworth St. Agnes Rectory, Cambridgeshire, the daughter of Emmeline Fuller Fitzjames and Robert Bonner Feast, clergyman.

At the time of the 1911 census John was visiting another clergyman Frederic Colborne Fisher & his family at Walton Rectory, Burton-on-Trent, Staffs.  John’s wife Mary Emmeline was living at the Vicarage at Ab Kettleby, Melton Mowbray,  Leicestershire with their son John Cuthbert (3) & daughter Joan Margaret (1).  They had a domestic servant & a nurse.

The 1939 register shows John & Mary living at Wickmere Rectory, Erpingham, Norfolk.  John was described as a clerk in holy orders & a member of Wickmere ARP.  Mary was in the Nursing Auxiliary Service.  With them was a teacher, Harold J Garde, & a domestic servant,  May Glister.

Son John Cuthbert, who was also a clerk in holy orders, was living at 193 Leicester Rd, Coalville, Leicestershire at the time of the 1939 register.  He was with his wife, Doreen A B Drew, he had married earlier that year in North Walsham, Norfolk. 

Daughter Joan was living at 9 Devonshire Terrace, Paddington, London in 1939 where she was a secretary, receptionist & book keeper.  In 1945 she was to marry Robert E Storrar, a school master,  in North Walsham, Norfolk.

The 1939 register shows son Anthony living at 4 Compton Rd, Halesowen, Worcs.  He was described as an electrical engineer economist.  He was to marry Barbara M Hutton in July-September 1942 at North Walsingham, Norfolk.

One of John & Mary Emmeline’s sons, Guy Humphrey Roscamp Pallister, was killed in the final days of the fall of Singapore while serving as a Lieutenant with the Royal Norfolk Regiment, 5th Battalion.  He died on January 24th, 1942 & is remembered at the Singapore Memorial & also on a war memorial in St Andrew’s church at Wickmere, Norfolk where his father was the vicar.  He has no known grave.

John died, aged 76, on July 16th, 1949 at The Rectory, Great Dunham, Kings Lynn, Norfolk.  Probate was granted on September 14th, 1949 to widow Mary Ann Eliza Emmeline.  His effects were £1,861.16s.5d.

Mary Emmeline, of Deep Thatch Cottage, Selborne, Alton, Hants, died, aged 91, on October 18th, 1974 at Droitwich, Worcs.  Her effects were £1300.
