Hannah Pallister [p.1.6.8.2]

Hannah Pallister was the second child of Thomas Pallister & Mary Blackburn born at Havannah & christened January 17th 1813 at Washington, Co Durham.

Hannah married Robert Hymers, a waggonman, on August 30th, 1840 at Kelloe (near Thornley), Co Durham. Both Hannah & Robert were of full age & both of New Thornley. Neither were able to sign the register & witnesses to the wedding were Thomas Pallister & Cuthbert Allison (church warden).

Robert was born September 6th, 1818 at Sunderland, the son of Margaret Hanson & John Hindmarch, a waggonman. (From genealogical records it is apparent that the names Hymers Hindmarch & Hindmarsh are surnames used interchangeably.)

In 1841 Hannah & Robert (Hindmarch) were living with Hannah's parents & 4 brothers & a sister at Queen St, Thornley, Kelloe. Robert was described as a coal labourer.

By 1851 Hannah & Robert (Hymers) were living at Birtley & Robert was now a coal waggonman. They had 3 sons – Thomas (7), Matthew (5) & John (2).

The family were still living at Birtley in 1861, now at Brickgarth. Robert (Hindmarch) was still a coal waggonman & all 3 sons were still at home – Thomas, an engineman, Matthew, a coal wagon boy & John, a scholar.

Living with them was Hannah's sister Mary Ann, who had married John Wilde in 1846, with her 3 children Mary Ann, Jane & Hannah.

Son Thomas married Elizabeth Lonsdale in 1865 in Chester-le-Street, Co Durham & son John married Isabella Halton in 1870 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

In 1871 Hannah & Robert (Hindmarsh) were still at Brickgarth but Robert was now a labourer on the railway. Only son Matthew, an engine driver, was still at home. Living next door was Hannah's sister Mary Ann Wilde with her 3 daughters.

Hannah died in Oct-December 1880 at Birtley, aged 68.

In 1881 widowed Robert (Hindmarsh) was living at the Cottage, Brickgarth, Birtley with son John who was a railway engine driver. Robert was now a general labourer. They had a 17 year old servant, Jane Isabella Collins. Son Matthew had married Susannah & was living at Ewe Hill, Ouston at the time of the census where he was a colliery engineman. They had 2 sons – Robert (4) & John H (2).

Robert was living at South Terrace, Monk Hesleden, Easington in 1891 with his nephew Robert Henderson, a coal miner, & his wife Hannah & their 11 month old daughter, Catherine.

Sadly by 1901 Robert (Hindmarsh) was found in the Gateshead Union Workhouse & described as a general labourer.

Robert died in Jan-March 1904, aged 87, his death being registered at Gateshead.
