William Pallister [p.1.6.8.8]

William Pallister was the eighth child of Thomas Pallister & Mary Blackburn born at North Side,Birtley, & christened November 12th, 1826 at Chester-le-Street, Co Durham.

In 1841 William was at home with his parents, brothers & sister at Queens St, Thornley, Co Durham. He was a coal miner.

In 1851 William was living with his sister Mary Ann & her husband John Wilde at Birtley. William’s parents were also living with them. William was a labourer.

In April-June 1853 William married Mary Forster at All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Mary was christened July 24th, 1831 at Washington, Co Durham, the daughter of Mary & Robert Forster, a wagonman of Wagon Row.

In 1861 William & Mary were living at Church Lane, Walker, Northumberland where William was an iron founder. They had 3 children – Robert (7), Mary Ann (5) & Hannah (3). Also living with them was Mary’s sister, Ann Forster, aged 16. It appears that daughter Hannah sadly died and there is a death registered for Hannah Pallister in July-September 1862 in Tynemouth.

William died, aged 40, on November 11th, 1865, at Church Lane, Walker, Northumberland.

In 1871 widow Mary was still living at Church St, Walker with son Robert, a moulder. They had a lodger, Samuel Battersby (35), also a moulder.

Mary was still at Church St, number 118, in 1881. Living with her was daughter Mary Ann, a housemaid. There were 2 boarders also there – Joseph Welch, an artist, & George Welch, a general clerk. Son Robert married Isabella Milne in Jan-March 1881.

In 1891 Mary was living at 103 Corbridge St, South Shields, with her daughter Mary Ann, who had married to Peter Valentine Wood in 1883. Peter was not listed on the census with them. Mary Ann & Peter had 3 children – Margaret V (5), James R (3) & Robert P (1).

By 1901 Mary had moved to 7 Bedford St, Poplar, London with her daughter Mary Ann, & son-in-law Peter Wood & their 4 children. Peter was a ships’ repairing foreman.

In 1911 Mary, now 81, was still living with her daughter Mary Ann, son-in-law Peter (a boilermaker at iron works) & granddaughter Margaret Valentine Wood at the same address. Mary & William's son Robert & his wife Isabella were living at 15 Choppinton St, Newcastle-upon-Tyne at the time of the census with 3 of their children. Robert was a clerk at the ship building works & the children were all employed at the ship building works too.
