Hannah Pallister [p.1.6.8.9.2]

Hannah Pallister was the second child of Robert Pallister & Mary Anne Cook born Jan-March 1853 at Birtley, Co Durham.

In 1861 Hannah was at home with her parents, 2 sisters & 2 brothers at Belmont Colliery, Pittington, Co Durham.

Hannah was working as a domestic servant for Jane Turnbull,  a grocer, in Birtley in 1871.

Hannah married Robert Stephenson in April-June 1874 at Chester-le-Street.  Robert was Robert was christened August 5th, 1832 at Rainton Chapel, Houghton-le-Spring, Co Durham, the son of Margaret & Thomas Stephenson, a pitman.

Robert & Hannah had a baby girl in 1875 who sadly died in infancy.

In 1881 Hannah & Robert were living at Ewe Hill, Ouston & Robert was a coal miner.  They had a 4 year old son named Robert.

The family were still living at Ewe Hill in 1891 & Robert was still working as a coal miner.  As well as son Robert, now working as a mason, they now had 2 more sons, John (8) & James (6).

By 1901 Robert had retired from mining  & he & Hannah were living at 48 Hylton Terrace, Pelton, Chester-le-Street, Co Durham.  All 3 sons were still at home – Robert & John were a brick layers (masons),  & James was a joiner’s apprentice.

Son James married Mary Ann Graham in Oct-December 1905 at Chester-le-Street & they were to have a son Norman on March 4th, 1910. In 1906 James became a member of the Chester-le-Street Union of Amalgamated Society of Carpenters & Joiners.

Hannah died, aged 54, in February 1907, her death being registered at Chester-le-Street. She was buried in Pelton Cemetery.

In 1911 widowed Robert was living alone at 48 Hylton Terrace, Pelton.  He recorded on the census that he & Hannah had had 5 children, 2 of whom had died.

There is a death for Robert Stephenson, aged 87, recorded in January 1920 at Chester-le-Street. He was buried in Pelton Cemetery.

The 1939 register shows son Robert & his wife Hannah were living at Rendale, Park Rd South, Chester-le-Street & Robert was a bricklayer.  Son John William & his wife Barbara Hannah (nee Lowther) were living at 3 Edward Terr, Chester-le-street in 1939.  John was a colliery mason. Son James & his family were living at 2 Bede Terr, Chester-le-Street in 1939.

p.1.6.8.9.2.3 John Thomas Stephenson born Oct-December 1879 at Ouston; died Oct-December 1880 at Ouston
p.1.6.8.9.2.4  John William Stephenson born June 22nd, 1882 at Ewe Hill, Ouston, Co Durham; died February 16th, 1959 at 3 Edward Terrace, Chester-le-Street
p.1.6.8.9.2.5  James Pallister Stephenson born July-September 1884 at Ewe Hill, Ouston, Co Durham; died Oct-December 1959 in Co Durham
