Thomas Stephenson [s.4.1.2]

Thomas Stephenson was the second child of Thomas Stephenson & Elizabeth Gibson christened June 20th, 1848 at Stokesley, Yorks.

In 1851 Thomas was living with his parents, brother & sister at Front St, Stokesley, where his father was a shoemaker.

In 1861 the family was living at North Side, Stokesley & Thomas was now an apprentice saddler. Thomas’s 4 brothers & a sister were also at home.

Thomas married Ann Wainwright on December 24th, 1867 at York Register Office. Ann was born July-September 1847 at Leven Bridge, Yorks, the daughter of Mary Passman & Joseph Peter Wainwright.

In 1871 Thomas & Ann were living at 20 East St, St Thomas, Stockton & Thomas was a railway porter. They had 2 children, both born at Preston, Co Durham – (William) Henry (3) & Frederick (Charles) (8 months). Boarding with them was 17 year old Henry Wainwright, a labourer at the iron works.

By 1881 the family had moved to 13 Lawson St, Stockton & Thomas was now a railway check clerk. Children at home were William H, Frederick C, Thomas W (6), Arthur E (4) & Mary E (2).

In 1891 Thomas & Ann were living at 42 Disraeli St, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough. Thomas was no longer working for the railway, but had become a boot repairer. However it was noted on the census that he was neither an employer nor employed. At home were Arthur, Mary, George (9), Dolly (7) & Alice (3).

Thomas died in 1897, aged 50, & was buried on August 1st, 1897 at New Linthorpe Cemetery, Middlesbrough.

In 1901 widowed Ann (listed as Annie) was living on her own means at 36 Hold St, Middlesbrough. With her were daughters Dorothy (Dolly) & Alice.

By 1911 Ann was living at West Rounton, Northallerton with her daughter Dorothy Ann & described as living on private means.  With them was daughter-in-law Margaret Stephenson (34) who was now widowed & also living on private means.  It was noted on the census that Ann had had 9 children, only 7 of whom were still alive.  Sadly, widowed Margaret had had 2 children, both of whom had died.

In 1911 son (John) George was living with his brother, Arthur, & his family at 63 Raby St, Tinsley, Sheffield.  George was working as a fitter at a general engineering works.

There is a death for Dorothy Stephenson, aged 45 years, in 1929 who was buried in West Rounton, Northallerton on February 5th, 1929.
