Mary Stephenson was the second child of John Stephenson & Sarah Robinson born at Ruswarp & christened June 8th, 1818 at Whitby.
In 1841 Mary was living at home with her parents at Hinderwell, Yorks.
Mary married John Taylor Harland on December 18th, 1845 at Whitby. Witnesses at the wedding were Frank Hodgson & George Sayer. John was a tailor of Hinderwell & Mary was a dressmaker of Mickleby. John was born at Staithes & christened August 20th, 1824 at Hinderwell, the son of Mary & Robert Harland, a mariner.
By 1851 Mary & John were living at Mickleby, Yorks & John was a master tailor. They had 2 children – Thomas (3) & Hannah (1).
They were still living at Mickleby in 1861 where John was a tailor. Son Thomas was living away from home with his uncle William at Sandsend Village, Lythe where he was a butcher’s boy. Hannah was still at home with brother William (7) & sisters Mary A (5) & Margaret (4).
John was still a tailor in 1871 & he & Mary continued to live at Mickleby. Son William was still at home & an apprentice tailor. The only other child at home was John, aged 9. Son Thomas was now married & a butcher at Hinderwell, Yorks & at the time of the 1871 census his sister Margaret was visiting.
John died on November 17th, 1880, aged 56, at Mickleby & was buried at St Oswald's, Lythe on November 22nd.
By 1881 widow Mary was living with her daughter Mary Ann at Bridge St, Whitby. Mary Ann had married George Hooper, a tailor & draper, & they had 3 children at this time. Mary's son John had also moved to Whitby, a pupil school teacher, & was also living with them. Living next door was Mary's son Thomas Harland & his family who was manager of a tea shop. Mary's son William was married to Annie Elizabeth McNiel & still living in Mickleby where he was a tailor & draper & visiting him at the time of the census was his sister Hannah.
Daughter Margaret married John Holroyd, an independent minister, in 1876 & at the time of the 1881 census they were living at the Manse, Sedburgh with son Herbert (3) & daughter Amy Peace (3 months). By 1891 John was living in North Meols, Lancashire & with him was daughter Amy & Margaret’s sister, Hannah Harland, housekeeper. John was noted as married although wife Margaret had died in 1883.
In 1891 Mary was living with her daughter Sarah who had married James Willis, a master mariner, in 1878 & their family at Elgin St, Ruswarp, Whitby.
Mary, aged 81, was living with another daughter in 1901. This time with daughter Hannah Harland (51) who was a lodging house keeper at 11 Langdale Terr, Ruswarp. Interestingly Hannah's sister Sarah (Willis) was also a lodging house keeper at 17 Crescent Ave, Ruswarp at this time (strangely listed as widowed!). Mary's son John Stephenson Harland had become a farmer in Mickleby by 1901 & was married to Jane Ann Raw (nee Smith).
Mary died on February 8th, 1907, aged 87, at 11 Langdale Terr, Ruswarp & was buried February 11th, 1907 at Lythe. Mary’s daughter Hannah also died later that year, aged 57.
In 1911 son William, his wife Annie & 3 of their children were living at Loftus, Yorkshire where William was still a tailor & draper. It was noted that William & Annie had had 14 children, only 10 of whom were still living. With William was brother John Stephenson Harland who was a farmer, but although listed as married, his wife Jane was not with him.
In 1911 daughter Sarah (Willis) (now listed as married) was still living at 17 Crescent Avenue, Ruswarp with daughter Mary & son James, a political agent’s clerk.
