John Stephenson was the seventh child of Thomas Stephenson & Mary Cooke christened July 8th, 1787 at Kildale, Yorks.
John married Sarah Robinson on November 23rd, 1815 at Lythe, Yorks. Sarah was born January 10 th , 1788 & christened January 11 th , 1788 at Hinderwell, (near Lythe), the daughter of Elisabeth & John Robinson.
In 1841 John & Sarah were living at Hinderwell with their daughters Mary (20) & Hannah (10) & John was an agricultural labourer. Son Joseph, 14, was living nearby with Thomas Skelton, a joiner, & Joseph was a joiner's apprentice.
In 1851 John & Sarah were living at Stump How, Mickleby where John was a farmer of 12 acres. The farm Stump How still exists today (2006) & is so named because of its situation at the site of a burial mound (a howe) with its surmounting stone ‘stump’, one of a series of markers at high points along the Yorkshire coast.
John died aged 72 in 1860 at Mickleby. He was buried on January 9th, 1860 at St Oswald’s, Lythe, Yorkshire.
At the time of the 1861 census Sarah (72) was visiting her son William Stephenson & wife Ann & their 4 children at the village of Sandsend, Lythe. William, who was born at Mickleby was a butcher. Also living with the family was nephew Thomas Harland (13), a butchers boy, & John Webster a 91 year old widower. They also had a servant Ruth Poritt.
In 1871 Sarah was living in the village of Lythe next door to the Red Lion on her own & was noted as a pauper. Her son William was still working as a butcher at Sandsend.
Sarah died at the age of 86, on April 3rd, 1875 at Sandsend, & was buried April 6th at St Oswald’s, Lythe, Yorkshire.
