Joseph Stephenson [s.7.5]

Joseph Stephenson was the fifth child of John Stephenson & Sarah Robinson christened January 1st, 1827 at Hinderwell, Yorks.

In 1841 Joseph was an apprentice joiner living in Hinderwell.

Joseph married Margaret Tyerman on January 20th, 1848 at Whitby. Witnesses at the wedding were Thomas Stephenson & William Stangoe & both Joseph & Margaret gave their occupations as servant.  Margaret was christened March 26th, 1827 at Easington near Guisborough, Yorks, the daughter of Ann & James Tyerman, a butcher,

In 1851 Joseph & Margaret were living at Mickleby where Joseph was an agricultural labourer. They had a 1 year old son John & living with them was Margaret’s sister Dorothy Tyerman (Tireman in census), aged 19, a dressmaker.

By 1861 Joseph & Margaret were living at Goldsbrough Village, Lythe & had 3 children at home – John, Ann (5) & Sarah (2).

In 1871 Joseph was still a farm labourer & he & Margaret were still at Goldsbrough Village with daughter Sarah & son James (4).

Daughter Ann married John William Lawson, a blacksmith, in July-September 1879, the marriage being registered at Guisbrough, Yorks.

They were still living at Goldsbrough in 1881 at Cottage House, with only son James left at home.

Joseph & Margaret were still at Goldsbrough village in 1891 & Joseph (63) was described as a woodman & labourer.

Daughter Sarah married John William Raw, a farmer,on November 20th, 1890 at Wesley Chapel, Whitby & in 1891 they were living in Goldsborough Village, Lythe.  

In April-June 1891 son James married Annie Margaret Cooper at Whitby. The 1901 census shows James working for Annie’s father, Stockton Cooper, both were farmers & living at Goldsborough.  James & Annie had 5 children by this time & sadly James died in 1905.

Joseph died on May 23rd, 1899, aged 72, at Goldsbrough & was buried on May 25th, 1899 at St Oswald's, Lythe, Whitby.

Widow Margaret was still living at Goldsbrough at the time of the 1901 census. She was 74 & living on her own means & visiting her at this time was Sarah Atkinson, a 74 year old widow.

In 1911 Margaret  was living on her own at Goldsbrough.  It was noted on the census that she had had 5 children, only 2 of whom were still alive. Daughter Ann & her husband John Lawson were living at 19 Emerald St, Saltburn, N. Yorks in 1911 with 2 of their daughters.  Visiting them was Ann’s cousin Mary Stephenson [s.7.1.4]. 

Margaret died, aged 87, in March 1915 at Goldsbrough & was buried with Joseph on March 13th,  at St Oswald’s, Lythe, Whitby.

The 1939 register shows daughter Sarah & husband John Raw, now a retired farmer, living at Victoria Square, Lythe, Whitby.  With them was Kate Stephenson who was single and aged 36, & Ronald Stephenson aged 5.

s.7.5.2 John Stephenson born Jan-March 1850 at Mickleby, Yorks; died at Goldsbrough & buried August 23rd, 1872 at Lythe
s.7.5.3 Ann Stephenson born at Barnby & christened April 6th, 1856 at Lythe, Yorks;
s.7.5.4 Sarah Stephenson born January 23rd, 1859 at Goldsbrough, & christened February 29th, 1859 at Lythe, Yorks; died Jan-March 1946 at Whitby
s.7.5.5 James Stephenson born at Goldsbrough & christened August 10th, 1866 at Lythe, Yorks; buried November 23rd, 1905 at Glaisdale, Yorks
