Ann Stephenson was the second child of George Stephenson & Jane Wade born 1813 at Aislaby & christened February 13th, 1815 at St John the Baptist, Egglescliffe.
Ann married John Melanby on December 2nd, 1837 at Egglescliffe. Ann was of Sadberge, Haughton-le-Skerne & John was a labourer of Aislaby. Both were of full age & both made their mark on the register. Witnesses were Jane Lest & Ann’s brother George Stephenson. John was christened May 22nd, 1814 at Middleton Tyas, Yorks, the son of Frances & John Mellonby.
In 1841 Ann & John (Mellanby) were living at Sadberge, Haughton-le-Skerne, nr Darlington, where John was an agricultural labourer. They had a 2 year old daughter Jane.
By 1851 Ann & John were living at Railway Cottages, Longnewton, nr Stockton & John was now a railway labourer. They still appear to have had only one daughter, Jane.
Ann died in 1853, age 38, & was buried on May 31st at St Mary’s, Long Newton, Stockton.

Daughter Jane Ann married John Taylor, a farmer, in 1861 & by 1871 they were living at Newhoneypot, Cockerton, Co Durham with their 4 children.
John Mellanby remarried in July-September 1858 at Stockton. His second wife was Jane Embleton, born c1829 at Yarm.
John & Jane could not be found in the 1861 census, but in 1871 they were living at 1 Railway Cottages, Marske, Yorks. John was described as a railway gate keeper. The oldest child at home was Alfred, 17, a labourer at the gas works, although it is not known whose child this was as he was born in Yarm. Other children at home were Amelia (9), Oliver (7), Emma (4) & John (3).
John, aged 65, died in 1880 & was buried on May 10th 1880 at St Germain & St Mark, Marske.
Widow Jane, now listed as Ann Mellanby, was found in the 1881 census with children Oliver (a fireman at the iron mines), Emma & John living at 44 Dale St, Marske.
By 1891 widowed Ann (Jane) was living at 19 Stanley St, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough with children Oliver (listed as John), a railway number taker, Emma, John J, a railway shunter.
There is a death recorded for Jane Mellanby aged 62, in 1892 who was buried on May 22nd, 1892 at Linthorpe Cemetery, Middlesbrough.
