George Stephenson [s.9]

George Stephenson was the ninth child of Thomas Stephenson & Mary Cooke christened January 13th, 1793 at Kildale, Yorks.

George married Jane Wade, after the reading of banns at Egglescliffe on May 16th, 1812. George signed the marriage register & Jane made her mark. Witnesses at the wedding were George Wison & Robert Coates. Jane, born in Greta Bridge, Yorks, was christened March 5th 1784 in the parish of Brignall, which includes Greta Bridge the daughter of Thomas Wade. George was described as a labourer in husbandry in the birth records of his children.

George & Jane came to live in Aislaby, Co Durham where they appear to have had 7 children. Sadly 2 of their children died in infancy – William died of smallpox at the age of 6 & Jane died aged 5.

George died at Aislaby, aged 45 & was buried January 10th, 1837 at St John the Baptist, Egglescliffe.

Jane was found in the 1841 census for Aislaby working as an agricultural labourer with her daughter Sarah, aged 14.

In 1851 widow Jane was still working as a farm labourer but in receipt of parish relief at Aislaby. Living with her was brother-in-law Joseph Stephenson, a 64 year old widower born at Kildale, Yorks.

In 1861 Jane (77) was living alone at & the census notes that she was ‘retired through age’, & now living at Egglescliffe village.

Jane was living with son Joseph & his family at the time of the 1871 census at Low Stone Cottage, Low Worsall, Yorks & was an annuitant. Joseph was an agricultural labourer, married to Jane Carter & they had 2 children at home – Joseph & George.

Jane died at Low Worsall at the grand old age of 90, & was buried on October 14th, 1871 at St John & All Saints, High Worsall, Yorks.

s.9.4 William Stephenson born Aislaby & christened July 22nd, 1819 at Egglescliffe, buried May 23rd, 1825 at Egglescliffe
s.9.5 Joseph Stephenson born Aislaby & christened March 3rd, 1822 at Egglescliffe, buried September 9th, 1905 at Shadforth
s.9.6 Jane Stephenson born Aislaby & christened June 13th, 1825 at Egglescliffe, buried December 26th, 1830 at Egglescliffe
s.9.7 Sarah Stephenson born Aislaby & christened October 16th, 1828 at Egglescliffe, died May 1st, 1891 & buried May 5th, 1891 at Holy Trinity Church, Seaton Carew, Co Durham
