William Chipchase Stainsby [sb.9.3.3]
William Chipchase Stainsby was the third child of William Stainsby & Margaret Christiana Chipchase born April 10th, 1879 christened May 25th, 1879 at Hovingham, Yorks.
William grew up at Hovingham Hall where his father was a butler for the Worsley family. He was recorded there in the 1881 & 1891 censuses.
In 1901 William was lodging at 8 Albermarle Crescent, Scarborough & his occupation was given as school master (B.S.).
William married Gertrude Paterson MacKay in Jan-March 1905 at Scarborough. Gertrude was born July-September 1877 at York, the daughter of Janet & William MacKay, an agent for the manufacture of agricultural chemicals. Gertrude was living in Scarborough with her family at the time of the 1901 census.
In 1911 Gertrude & William were living at 2 Mornington Villas, High Rd, Woodford Wells, Essex. William was a clergyman of the established church. They had a 2 year old daughter, Janet Christine, & the census shows that another daughter, Violet, had died. Living with them was Laura Edith Coton, a ‘lady help’.
On leaving Woodford in 1914 where he had been curate at All Saints for 6 years, William was presented with a cheque for £200 & many handsome gifts. He & his familymoved to Chigwell, Essex where they lived at the Rectory, Chigwell. This is known from a document held by Essex Archives detailing his resignation from the Rectory in 1920.
It appears that he then became Rector of St Peter's, Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire in 1920 where he remained as vicar until 1948.

Son Anthony visited India whilst an undergraduate & sailed from Bombay to Plymouth before returning to Berkhamstead in April 1931. The 1939 register shows him still single & living at Arrow Court, Alcester, Warwickshire, where he was a land agent.
Daughter Janet Christine married Alfred Nicholas Breton in July-September 1932 at Berkhamstead. Alfred died in 1948 & Janet remarried in 1949 at Kensington. Her second husband was Edward H H Stenning.
Gertrude died on February 16th, 1933 at Berkhamsted & was buried at Three Close Lane Cemetery, Berkhamsted. Her headstone reads ‘Gertrude Paterson, wife of William Chipchase Stainsby (rector of this parish) died 16 th February, 1933'. Probate was granted in London on June 27th, 1933 to husband William, & to son-in-law Alfred Nicholas Breton, clerk & Rev. Eric John Anthony, clerk. Her effects amounted to £1,178.10s.10d.

William married again in April-June 1934 at Pancras, London. His second wife was Mabel Alice Brown (nee Penton), born June 19th, 1875, at Romford, Essex.
William was the executor of his father's will in 1936.
The 1939 register shows William & Mabel living at Chesgam Avenue, Berkhamstead & William was described as a clerk in Holy Orders.
In May 1948 William became vicar of All Saints, Cople, Bedfordshire, where he was incumbent until 1950.
William of Peat Moor, Church Rd, Fleet died, aged 72, on May 15th, 1951 at Fleet & District Hospital, Fleet, Hampshire. Probate was granted to Maurice Penton Brown, BBC producer & William’s effects were £3,120.0s.2d.
Mabel of Peat Moor, Church Rd died at Fleet & District Hospital, Fleet, Hampshire on February 16th, 1959. Her effects were £16,632.2s.5d.
