William Stainsby [sb.9.3]
William Stainsby was the third child of Robert Stainsby & Elizabeth Brewer christened May 24th, 1846 at Pickering, Yorks.
In 1851 William was at home with his parents & brothers & sisters at Westgate, Pickering.
In 1861 William was working as a plough boy at the Farm House, Settrington, nr. Malton. The head of the household was Thomas Warters, a farmer of 409 acres.
By 1871 William was employed as the footman of Marcus Worsley of Terrington Hall (Late Rectory), Terrington, Yorks. Marcus Worsley, a 77 year old widower, was described as a retired commander of the Royal Navy.
On August 25th, 1873 William married Margaret Christiana Chipchase, at St Mark’s, Woodhouse, Leeds. Witnesses at the wedding were William & David Chipchase. Christiana, as she was known, was christened January 26th, 1851 at Hovingham, Yorks, the daughter of Charity & William Chipchase, a time keeper. William & Christiana were both employed at Terrington Hall at the time of the 1871 census, when Christiana was working as a ladies’ maid.
In 1881 William & Christiana were living next to Hovingham Hall. William’s occupation was a domestic butler, presumably for the Hall. They had 3 children by this time – Frederick (6), Edith (3) & William (2).
William was still employed as a domestic butler in 1891 for the Worsley family living at Hovingham Hall, the next dwelling in the census schedule. Head of the Worsley family was William G Worsley, baronet & J.P. for North Yorks & his wife Lady Harriet Worsley. William & Christiana (now Margaret in census) were recorded as ‘Wainsby’ in the Ancestry.co.uk index! Only children Edith & William were living at home as Frederick had died in July-September 1884, aged 10.
Margaret Christiana died aged 49 in 1900, & was buried on December 26th, 1900 at Hovingham.
In 1901 widowed William (54) was described as a house servant & still living at Hovingham. With him was daughter Edith (23), an elementary school teacher.

In 1911 William was still employed at Hovingham Hall, as a butler. With him at the time of the census was Annie Jane Judson (39), a nurse. She was listed as a visitor. The census shows that Sir W H A Worsley & family, the occupants of the Hall, were ‘away on tour’! William’s daughter Edith was visiting her cousin in Leeds at the time of the census. Cousin Carry Chipchase Dobson & her husband Harry Dobson, a cashier at a woollen warehouse, lived at The Croft, Ash Road, Headingley, Leeds. Edith’s occupation was given as church organist.
On August 1st, 1921 William remarried at Hovingham at the age of 75! His new wife was 45 year old Clara Abbott who was christened February 13th, 1876 at Hovingham, the daughter of Mary & Thomas Abbott, a station master. At the time of the 1901 census Clara was living in Hovingham with her widowed mother Mary & working as an elementary school teacher.

Clara died on May 7th, 1936 at Hovingham. Administration of her will was granted at York on June 5th, 1936 to husband William, described as a retired assistant estate agent. Her effects were £760.1s.10d.
Widowed William died soon after Clara, on December 30th, 1936 at Hovingham. Probate was granted at York on February 16th, 1937 to son Rev. William Chipchase Stainsby, clerk. William’s effects were £1,927.1s.8d.
