John Smeed was the second child of William Smeed & Elizabeth Wood born 1840 at Isabella St, Lambeth & christened August 2nd, 1840 at Lambeth St Mary, London.
In 1841 John & his parents were living at Isabella Street, Lambeth along with his older brother William.
The family were still living at Isabella St. in 1851 & John now had a brother & 2 sisters.
John’s mother died in 1859 & in 1861 John was living with his widowed father at Isabella St & working as a warehouseman.
John married Ellen Eliza Revell on September 3rd, 1865 at St Peter’s, Walworth. Witnesses at the wedding were Joseph Revell & Elizabeth Smeed. Ellen was christened January 24th, 1844 at St John the Evangelist, Lambeth, London, the daughter of Susannah & Joseph Revell, a tin plate worker.
John & Ellen could not be found at the time of the 1871 census but in 1876 the family were living at 54 Chatham Street when they had 3 of their children christened together at St John’s, Newington, Surrey
in 1881 they were living 5 Runham St, St Peter Walworth & John was now a lamp salesman. They had a number of children – Ada (12), John Joseph (10), Elizabeth Ann (7), William H (4), Alfred B (1). Also living with them was Ellen’s widowed mother, Susannah Revell, a 56 year old dressmaker, & a 72 year old aunt, Charlotte Whitfield, a nurse.
John died on August 26th, 1887 at Runham St. Administration of his estate was granted to widow Ellen Eliza & his effects were £45.
Daughter Ada married Henry Heard, a stationer, in 1889 at St Stephen’s, Walworth.
In 1891 widowed Ellen, a basket binder, was living at 41 Warner St, St George the Martyr. With her was her mother Susannah, also a basket binder & children John J, a book keeper, Elizabeth, a basket binder, William H, a clerk for the county council, Marion (9) & Edward J (4). They also had a boarder, James Mennie, a carpenter.
In 1898 daughter Elizabeth Ann married Richard Render Jones, a rent debt collector, at St George the Martyr, Southwark. In 1901 they were living in Chertsey with their 1 year old daughter, Ellen Elizabeth, & boarding with them was Elizabeth’s brother Alfred, a tailor.
In 1899 son William Harry married Mary Fanny Monk at St Saviours, Southwark & in 1911 they were living in Tunbridge Wells where William was a solicitor’s clerk.
Ellen, now a needlewoman was still living with her mother in 1901 at the same address. With her were daughter Marion, a book keeper, & son Edward J, a clerk in the leather trade. Also at the same address was daughter Ada & her husband Henry Heard, a packer at a chemical manufacturers, & their 4 children.
Son Alfred Benjamin married Elizabeth Eleanor Jones in October 1901 at St Peter’s, Chertsey. Sadly Elizabeth died in 1914 & Alfred married again in 1916, his second wife being Avis Louise Edwards.
In 1907 son John Joseph, a commercial traveller, married for the second time at St John’s, Deptford & his new wife was Daisy Lilian Bell. His first wife Emily Hardwidge who he married in 1893 had died. Daughter Marion also married in 1907. She married Frederick Poole, a commercial clerk, in July at St Andrew’s, Newington.
In 1910 son Edward married Ada Lena Jane Walton at St Mary’s, Newington. Edward served in the Royal Naval Air Service during WW1.
By 1911 Ellen & her mother were still living at 41 Warner St & daughter Ada & husband Henry & their 4 children were still living there too.
Ellen died aged 90 in July-September 1934 in north west Surrey.
