Ralph Speed was the second child of John Speed & Hannah Storey born October 13th, 1809 & christened February 28th, 1810 at Sunderland, Co Durham.
Ralph became a mariner like his father John. It is recorded that Ralph was ‘expected to be drowned on February 17th, 1837’ while working as a merchant seaman on the Alfred.
