Mary Speed was the third child of John Speed & Hannah Storey christened October 23rd, 1811 at Sunderland, Co Durham.
On January 16th 1837 Mary married Thomas Lloyd at St Peter’s, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland. Thomas was born July 29th, 1811 & christened August 15th, 1811 at Sunderland, the son of Frances Minikin & Thomas Loyd, mariner. Thomas had been apprenticed to the British Mariners in 1823 with consent of his mother Frances.
In 1841 Mary was living with her mother, brother & 2 sisters at Throston St, Hartlepool, Co Durham & described as a ship captain’s wife.
By 1851 Mary was living at Wilson St, Tower Hamlets, Limehouse, London. With her were children TJ (10), MH (7), RS (5) & WH (2) but Thomas was not at home at the time of the census. The family were living next to Mary’s sister Hannah & husband Richard Rounthwaite. Thomas was awarded his Master’s Certificate of Service with the Merchant Navy on December 9th, 1851 at Hartlepool.
In August 1854 Thomas applied to the Marine Board for the Port of London to obtain a ‘Certificate of Competency’ as a Master Ordinary. He gave his address as 1 Mercers Terrace, Limehouse & stated that he was born at Sunderland on July 29th, 1811. He gave evidence that he was a Master on the ‘Jenny Lind’ of London from July 5th, 1847 to the present time. Among the ships he listed he had served on was ‘the Cossack’ which is the ship Mary’s brother had also worked on.
By 1861 Mary had been widowed & was head of the household at 14 Stepney Causeway, Tower Hamlets, Stepney. With her was son Thomas J, a wine merchant’s clerk, daughter Mary H, & sons William H & Frederic (7) both scholars. They had a boarder, William H Rose, a cabinet maker.
Daughter Mary married Charles Edmund John Wentzell in 1866 at St Stephen’s, Bow, London.
In 1867 son Thomas married Mary Miller Trowbridge in Stepney, London.
Mary was living at 146 Burdett Rd, Mile End Old Town, London in 1871. With her were sons Robert S, a mariner, & Frederic, a commercial clerk. Mary was described as being supported by her family.
Son Robert married Flora Jane Braund in 1875 at Stratford, Bow, London. Robert became a master mariner in the merchant navy & he & Flora were to have 14 children, 12 of whom had survived by 1911.
Son Frederic married Ada Titterton Geale in 1880 in West ham, London.
In 1881 Mary was living on her own at 56 Bloomfield Rd, Mile End Old Town & was an annuitant.
Mary had moved to 86 Campbell Rd, Bromley, London by 1891 & was described as living on her own means.
Mary died in Oct-December in Oct-December 1897 in Bromley, London.
