Hannah Speed [sp.1.5.1.3.6]

Hannah Speed was the sixth child of John Speed & Hannah Storey born 1819 at Mauds Open & christened May 9th, 1819 at Sunderland.

In 1841 Hannah was living with her ‘widowed’ mother Hannah at Throston St, Hartlepool, Co Durham.  Also at home were her brother Robert & sister Sarah.

On January 12th, 1850 Hannah married Richard Rounthwaite at St Dunstan & All Saints, Stepney, Middlesex.  Richard was christened October 3rd, 1821 at Hexham, Northumberland, the son of Sarah & Richard Rounthwaite, a revenue officer.

 By 1851 Hannah & Richard, a city coal maker?, & their 5 month old son John were living at 34 Wilson St, Tower Hamlets, Limehouse, London.  Living with them was Hannah’s mother Hannah who was now widowed, described as an annuitant.

 Hannah & Richard were living at 7 Barnes St, Tower Hamlets in 1861 where Richard worked as a coal meter.  As well as son John they had another son Richard aged 9.  They also had a 64 year old boarder, Emma C Hempen, a proprietor of houses.

By 1871 Richard & Hannah had moved to Broad St, Stepney, Tower Hamlets & Richard was now described as a ‘clerk coal meter’.  Only son Richard was living at home who was also a clerk.

In 1875 son John qualified as second mate in the merchant navy.  Sadly he was to die at sea on December 27th, 1888 while serving on the SS Camilla.

Richard had retired by 1881 & he & Hannah were living at 49 Grove Villas, Mornington Rd, Leyton Stone, Essex.  Son Richard was still with them & worked as a commercial clerk.

All 3 were still living at the same address at the time of the 1891 census & son Richard was still a clerk.  Later in 1891, on September 15th, Richard married Mabel Louisa Saunderson at St George, Ramsgate, Kent.

Richard died at 29 Harvey Rd, Leytonstone, Essex on February 27th, 1895. Probate was granted to widow Hannah & his effects were £382.6s.

Widowed Hannah was living on her own in 1901 at 45 Cowley Rd, Leytonstone & described as living on her own means.

By 1911 Hannah was boarding with George Parr, a railway time keeper, & family at 35 Esther Rd, Leytonstone.
Hannah died in April-June 1912 at West Ham, Essex.

sp.1.5.1.3.6.2  Richard Rounthwaite born Jan-March 1852 in Stepney & christened December 19th, 1852 at Stepney, Middlesex; died February 4th, 1914 at 9 Holly Rd, Leytonstone, Essex
