James Stone [st.1.5]

James Stone was the sixth child of William Stone & Ann Simcox christened September 6th, 1829 at Tipton, Staffs.

James, a puddler, married Mary Ann Sutton on May 21st, 1848, at St George’s Church, Birmingham.  Mary Ann was born c1827 at Oldbury, Shropshire, the daughter of John Sutton, a pistol filer.

In 1849 James & Mary Ann were living at Duke St, West Bromwich where their first child, John, was born on March 11th.

By 1851 James & Mary Ann (Hone on Ancestry.co.uk index) & son John were living at John St, West Bromwich & John was a furnaceman. Visiting them was Mary Ann’s sister, Elizabeth Sutton (22).

By 1861 they had moved to Bradford, Manchester, Lancs & were living at Parker St & James was described as a puddler. As well as son John D they also had James H (9), Joseph R (7) & Solomon (10 months). Later that year baby Solomon died, aged 1.

In 1871 James & Mary Ann had returned to Staffordshire & were living in the High St, Tunstall, Wolstanton. James, sons James & Joseph were all iron workers. Other children at home were Esther (8), Rachael (4) & Catherine (3).

James & Mary Ann had moved again & at the time of the census in 1881 were living at 5 Enys St, Pendleton, Salford, Lancs & James was again described as an iron puddler. At home were Esther & Rachel, both cotton weavers, & Catherine. They had 3 boarders, 2 of which were iron puddlers & the third was a butcher.

James died in Jan-March 1882, aged 52, the death being registered at Salford.

In 1891 widowed Mary Ann was living at 32 Renshaw St, Pendleton with her daughter Catherine, a cotton winder. They had a boarder, Ann Howarth (27), a ‘cotton maker up’.

Mary Ann was living with son James & his wife Alice & family at 10 Dumville St, Pendleton in 1901.

Mary Ann died in April-June 1910, aged 83, the death being registered at Salford.
