Mabel Elizabeth Wall [w.8.6]

Mabel Elizabeth Wall was the sixth child of Edward Wall & Mabel Wale born November 8th, 1854 & christened December 17th, 1854 at Christ Church, West Bromwich.

Mabel was still living at home in 1871 with her widowed father & brothers at Newhall St, West Bromwich.

At the time of the 1881 census Mabel, aged 26, was a domestic cook for the Lingard family at 26 Iron Gate, Derby. Head of the household James Lingard was a bank manager.

In July-September 1884 Mabel married Isaac Timmins at London Rd Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Derby. Isaac was born November 26th, 1864 at West Bromwich & christened July 9th, 1865 at Christ Church, West Bromwich, the son of Hannah Brookes & Richard Timmins, a puddler.

In 1891 Mabel & Isaac (recorded as Timmis on census) were living at 30 Grove St, Derby & Isaac was a blacksmith.  They had 3 of their own children at home – Winifred (4), Isaac E (2) & Thomas Henry (4 months). Their first child, Hannah Florence had sadly died in 1886.   Also living with Mabel and Isaac was their  ‘adopted’ daughter, niece Mabel Rebecca Wall, aged 11 who was the daughter of Mabel’s brother William Harvey Wall & his wife Rebecca Crust.

In 1901 they were still living at 30 Grove St, but now Isaac is recorded as a furniture dealer.  Sons Isaac & Thomas were still at home & 2 more sons had arrived – James (7) & Walter (5).  Niece Mabel Wall was still living with them & listed as a domestic servant.  Daughter Winifred had died just before the 1901 census, aged 13.

Mabel & Isaac were still in the same house  in 1911 but were now occupying both 30 & 31Grove Street- they had 8 rooms.  Isaac was again working as a furniture dealer & all 4 sons were still at home.  Son Isaac Edward was a house painter & paper hanger, Thomas Henry was a furniture upholsterer for J. Jones & son, James was a grocer’s apprentice & son Walter was an apprentice boiler riveter.  They also had a boarder.  It was noted on the census that Mabel & Isaac had had 6 children, only 4 of whom were still living.

Mabel died September 29th, 1932, aged 77 at Derby. Her funeral took place on October 10th at the Queen’s Hall Mission & she was buried at Nottingham Rd. Cemetery.

Isaac died February 18th, 1939, aged 74, at 35 Brighton Road Derby. Probate was granted on March 20th, 1939 son Isaac Edward, gas company collector, & John Henry Garton, grocers’ inspector.  His effects amounted to £1,735.8s.6d. Many people attended Isaac’s funeral at Queen’s Hall Methodist Mission, Derby & he was buried at Nottingham Rd. Cemetery.  Prior to his death Isaac had been a retired railway storekeeper. He had been associated with the Methodist Mission for nearly 60 years.

Son Isaac Edward & his wife Elizabeth Ellen (nee Shepherd m. 1914) were living at 63 Cooperative St, Derby at the time of the 1939 register with daughters May & Bessie.  Isaac was a prepayment meter collector.  Isaac was active in local politics & an article in Derby Daily Telegraph of Octber 16th 1945 reveals that he had to withdraw as Labour candidate for Becket Ward in the municipal election, the reason being that his employers (Derby Gas Co,) would not grant him leave of absence in working hours for other duties.

Son Thomas Henry & his wife Louie (nee Linkhorn m. 1914) were living at Broad Lane, Coventry in 1939 & Thomas was a newsagent & general dealer, assisted by his wife Louie.

Son James & his wife May (nee Garton m. 1916) were living at 1127 London Rd, Derby in 1939 & he was described as a director of a grocery.  With them was son James jnr. who was a grocery van driver & Albert Garton an engine fitter.

Son Walter & his wife Rachel (nee Dorrington m. 1919)  were living at 35 Brighton Rd, Derby in 1939 with daughter Winifred Mabel, a shop manager of her own grocery business, & son Thomas who was still at school.  Walter was a baker & confectioner & Rachel was a confectioner.
