John Winder [wi.1]

John Winder was the first child of Edmond Winder & Elizabeth Dawson christened November 19th, 1751 at Bray, Berkshire.

John married Frances Knowles on March 11th, 1775 at Clewer, Berks.  Witnesses at the wedding were William Putnam & Elizabeth Winder.  Frances was christened September 1st, 1754 at Clewer, the daughter of Elisabeth & Francis Knowles.

John received a legacy from his mother on her death in 1781 of £5 for mourning & £5 per annum until the sum amounted to £40.

John & Frances had one known son, Knowles Winder christened January 28th  1776 at Clewer. Knowles married Caroline Carter in 1806 at St George, Hanover Square. Knowles was a grocer in partnership with Joseph Piper in Richmond as evidenced by newspaper listings of their bakruptcy in 1808/9. A notice in the Morning Post of June 9th, 1809 stated that a valuable freehold estate called Chamberlaines consisting of farmhouse, barns, stables & extensive pasteur & orchards in Wargrave, Berks was for sale by direction of Joseph Piper & Knowles Winder, bankrupts. After the dissolving of their partnership Joseph Piper carried on his business as a grocer at the Old Established Shop in George St.

There is a death for John Winder, aged 63, of Mitcham, Surrey in 1814 buried November 13th at St Peter & St Paul, Mitcham.

Frances died at Willowbrook Place near Eton College, Bucks in 1823 & was buried on December 22nd at St Andrew's, Clewer, Berks. When Frances wrote her will in 1818 she was of Richmond, Surrey. Benefiting from the will were Joseph Piper of Richmond, gentleman, & her friend Joseph Charriott, gentleman, of Windsor. Joseph Charriott was appointed executor of her will & received 10 guineas for a ring. He was to administer her estate & give to Joseph Piper & his heirs the dividends thereof. On Joseph Piper's decease the funds were to go to her granddaughter, Elizabeth Helena Winder, in trust. An article in the Windsor & Eton Express of December 20th, 1823 reported that Mr Joseph Piper, aged 79, of Willowbrook Place, Eton died suddenly & a few days later, also suddenly, Mrs Winder died. She was stated to be a relative & housekeeper of Joseph Piper.
